Stephen Colbert could be facing some legal trouble. On Monday's 'Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central), Stephen revealed that a staff member found a credit card belonging to a Goldman Sachs employee. Goldman Sachs is a major banking firm -- their selling of "ultra-risky" junk mortgages led to the Wall Street collapse ... which led to the current recession.During the Wall Street bailout, Goldman Sachs got $10 billion from the government. But after receiving the handout, the company made the highly questionable decision to give out $4.82 billion in bonuses. Goldman Sachs gave 1,556 employees bonuses of one million dollars or more. So after his writer found a Goldman Sachs credit card, Colbert decided to have some revenge.
Colbert said that Americans are facing 10 percent unemployment following the bailout. Then, he said this to Goldman Sachs: "Come on my show and talk about Wall Street bonuses. ... Each night that you don't, I will reveal one digit of your credit card number." And tonight, he got a cease-and-desist email from their lawyers.
The email said this: "RETURN [THE] CREDIT CARD TODAY." Colbert agreed to return the MasterCard, which belonged to a Mr. Buckley T. Ratchford. He only ever got as far as revealing the first digit of the card number. (For the record, that number was "5.") But before sending it back, he ran it through a credit card machine and "swiped" the entire number. "I don't really need [the card] anymore," he said.
