Barbra Streisand Would Rather Direct Movies Than Work on Her House (VIDEO)

Barbra Streisand Would Rather Direct Movies Than Work on Her HouseBarbra Streisand appeared on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM ET on ABC). While on the show, she talked about her dormant film career, and how she would like to make a return to directing movies. Babs said that directing a film is "easier than building a house." In her case, this could easily be true.

Streisand discussed her newest home, located in Malibu, California -- it's one of three houses that she has on the same compound. This most recent addition is called "The Barn" -- Streisand spent five years on the construction, hiring and firing a dozen architects while building it.

Barbra began working on The Barn after a movie project fell through -- as a result, she had "a need for artistic expression." Her design choices were unique -- including a row of life-sized fake shops which she calls "the stores."

The price of the compound is not known; it's estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars. But it has also had some unexpected additional costs. In 2003, Barbra sued an environmentalist for taking an aerial photo of the compound as part of a coastal erosion survey. She sued for $50 million; her case was dismissed, and the singer was ordered to pay over $150,000 in legal fees.

It's all a far cry from her earlier life. Her first apartment in New York only cost $60 a month. Barbra has also said she never had a doll when she was growing up -- now, one of the replica "stores" on her compound is used solely to house her antique doll collection.
