Top 10 TV Commercials of 2010

by Pat Gallagher, posted Dec 18th 2010 11:00AM
E Trade Baby CommercialSince television first became available to Americans (circa 1947), people have been able to relax in the comfort of their own homes to watch a variety of programs – sitcoms, soap operas, sports, made-for-TV movies, variety shows, dramas, talk shows, games shows, reality shows ... well, you get the picture.

The one thing all of these programs have in common? Ugh! Commercials. But wait, hold the phone. Some aren't so bad and actually quite often serve a purpose. They use creative concepts to grab our attention, all while telling us why we should buy their car insurance, apply for their credit cards or watch their upcoming movies. Some commercials actually give us some comedy relief to go with our head cold or heartburn.

We looked back over the year and chose our 10 favorite TV commercials for 2010. See if you agree, then let us know which ones we missed!

10. Manning Bowl II for Direct TV
Brothers Peyton and Eli are at it again. New York Giant quarterback Eli Manning locks big brother Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton in a closet so he can't ride in the car with papa Archie to the field for their NFL showdown (Sept. 19). The payoff comes when Peyton encounters a spider somewhere in the dark closet (maybe in his cleats?) and daddy gives his younger son a suspicious look after asking "Where's Peyton?" as "3-year-old" mental giant Eli gives the "I dunno" shrug. We adore those Manning brothers!!

9. Leno, Oprah, and Letterman sitting on a couch (Super Bowl XLIV commercial)
You could have knocked the entire nation over with a feather when those three appeared together in this surprise commercial that had Dave whining: "This is the worst Super Bowl party ever!" It was a send-up of the bad blood that apparently existed between the two late night hosts at the time, with Oprah there as a mediator. It was 15 seconds well worth the money! And the kicker? It was a commercial for 'The Late Show with David Letterman.' Leno was the good sport here. Funny stuff!

8. Geico's Gecko wallet/cell phone commercial
OK, 'fess up. This little green Gecko spokes-lizard is just the cutest fictional cartoon-like animal since Yoda. How can we resist the little guy with the big bug eyes when he's pushing Geico car insurance with that Aussie-ish accent? How clever that the boss (do we know his name other than "Sir?") is thrown off guard when the Gecko shows up with a cell phone (where does he put it?) and that oversized wallet. Too cute! We also liked the one where the Gecko is sucked up into the vacuum tube. Thank God PETA stayed out of that one.

7. "My name is Peggy" Discover Card commercial
This commercial is so clever that you may not even realize what "Mr." bearded Peggy is selling. We're too busy thinking about how many times we've needed information and gotten someone on the other end of the phone with Peggy-like overtures -- then began laughing too hard to care what he/she is pushing. Turns out it's Discover Card making a case for good customer service over Peggy's "USA Prime Credit." For whatever reason, we tolerate you, Peggy.

6. E*Trade Baby Girlfriend commercial
All the E*Trade baby commercials are hilarious and just too cute! We could have picked "First Class," "Baby Tears" or "Baby Time Out," but we had to choose one so we're going with the E*Trade baby boy whose excuse to his little baby girlfriend -- on the other end of Skype -- for not calling her last night is that he was busy diversifying his portfolio. He then gets caught with that milkaholic baby girl, Lindsay. Boys to men, they're all alike. All they want to do is diversify!

5. Kevin Bacon Logitech Revue, Google TV commercial
This recent commercial is already a is a must-see for anyone who needs a "Bacon" fix. Your 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,' is cut down to one. "If you can think it, you can watch it." Laugh at your own risk.

4. Josh Hamilton 'This is Sportscenter' commercial
Sportsenter must have professional comedians on the payroll. They make so many funny commercials every year that we could have chosen at least a dozen. We narrowed it down to this one because the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. Enough said.

3. Hallmark Card Mother's Day commercial
Sometimes "just" a card to express the love a child feels for their mother seems redundant, but we see here that it's the simplest expression of love that touches a mother's heart the most. If you don't shed a few tears over this commercial, then you may want to check your heart for leaks. Get out the Kleenex.

2. Old Spice "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" commercial
You know a commercial is gold when it wins awards at the Emmys and Cannes, coins a catchphrase ("I'm on a horse"), gets parodied by 'Sesame Street' and makes a star out of the actor in it (Isaiah Mustafa). The laugh-out-loud ad first ran during the Super Bowl and was watched by millions on YouTube afterward.

1. Betty White/Abe Vigoda Snickers commercial
This Super Bowl commercial helped catapult Ms. Betty White to superstar status beyond her wildest dreams. At 88, she became the poster girl for senior sexy broads, hosted 'Saturday Night Live,' got her own television show on TV Land ('Hot in Cleveland'), landed on Barbara Walters Most Fascinating People of 2010 list and basically reigned over popular culture. There is no stopping her now. Poor 89-year-old Abe Vigoda (whose rumored "death" so far has been greatly exaggerated), just collected mud for his trouble (and probably a case of Snickers candy bars). Where are his royalties out of that deal? We love you too, Abe! Best commercial of the year by far.

I love all these commercials. I actually personally know the man known as "Sir" in the Geico commercial! He is Brian Carney, the son of Art Carney who was on 'The Honeymooners'.

Commercial television advertising is highly used as a marketing tool. The basic idea of these ads is attract people towards products and proves its usability.

I agree with a previous comment; they should have included the Kia Soul "Black Sheep" hamster / rap ad. The creativity is off the chart. If the number of times that a video has been viewed on You Tube can be used as a reference for popularity, the Kia Black Sheep commercial has more hits than their number one pick (Betty White). Take a look; key KIA BLACK SHEEP in the YouTube search box.

I'd vote the progressive bimbo as the commercial entity i'd most like to kick in the nuts. No doubt she probably has a pair.

You missed the best, the Subway Samantha "I'm your girlfriend now" is the winner. Betty White, umm, no.

I also HATE HATE HATE those stupid Geico commercials...what the heck. By FAR the funniest, most clever and memorable one is KEVIN BACON, absolutely brilliant and hysterial. It is closely followed by the inimitable, Betty White. She is a CLASSIC!!! Go Betty!

While I LOVE the "My name is Peggy" Discover Card, the Allstate, "Mayhem" (especially the 16 year old girl one) and the Lincoln & Drill Sargent (BTW, I believe the Drill Sargent was actually in Full Metal Jacket, correct me if I'm wrong) Geico commercials, hands down, the "Old Spice Guy", Isaiah Mustafa *has* to be #1(call me!)

My favorite commercial is the one where Michael Strahan delivers a Pizza to Donovan McNabb's house and then tackles him. Fantastic!
