'Skating With the Stars' Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: Who Went Home in the Semi-Finals?

by Sharon Knolle, posted Dec 21st 2010 9:00AM
The 'Skating With the Stars' competition narrowed from three to just two celebs tonight. The elimination was definitely a surprise: The star who was sent home had been a favorite not just to continue, but to win.

The show started off with a group skate with some tricky lifts and spins which earned Rebecca Budig and her partner a 9, Jonny Moseley an 8 and Bethenny Frankel a 7.

Keep reading to see who got the boot and who's facing off in tomorrow night's finale.

And, for what it's worth, I've finally figured out who slightly spastic host Vernon Kay reminds me of: He's a cross between two of 'Bones'' quirkiest characters -- gawky Lance Sweets and verbose Brit Mr. Vincent Nigel Murray. In a virtual replay of the 'Dancing With the Stars' semi-finals, the high-scoring judges' favorite got sent home, while the less skilled underdog was saved by the viewers' votes. It was Olympian Jonny Moseley, and not reality star Bethenny Frankel, who's out of the competition.

Jonny's partner, Brooke Castile, looked shocked at hearing his name, then raved, "I think Jonny's amazing. I could not be more proud of him."

Moseley, although "a little surprised," thanked her for an "amazing experience ... I really enjoyed spending time with you, you're a great friend."

That leaves soap star Rebecca Budig, who's been in second place for most of the season, and Frankel, who's been ranked dead last, to compete for the er ... what is the skating prize? Glittery skates? We shall see!

Performances:

Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak
Johnny Weir had asked Rebecca to improve her solo skills and seemed pleased wth the results: He gave her his first 10 so far, for technical score, while the other judges gave her 9s. For artistic score, Laurie Ann Gibson and Dick Button both gave out their first 10s, while Johnny handed out a 9.

Technical score: 28 (9, 10, 9)
Artistic score: 29 (10, 9, 10)

Bethenny Frankel and Ethan Burgess
In the pre-performance package, Bethenny told Ethan that they could win this competition, despite being the underdog. "Who's to say I don't win on attitude and soul?" Since she didn't go home tonight, it could happen. Her feud with judge Johnny seemed to be over: He thought her crying after her skate was "beautiful" (she was missing her baby and husband) because she "felt something on the ice" and that she should be proud. Dick called her a fighter and praised her for taking their advice and actually skating, instead of stepping on the ice. Her scores were up from last week, but still not on par with her competitors.

Technical score: 21 (7, 7, 7)
Artistic score: 22 (8, 7, 7)

Jonny Moseley and Brooke Castile
"You are what this competition's all about," Johnny Weir told him, but he hated his song choice ('Let's Get It On'). "I like that song alone in my bedroom," said Weir -- now there's a mental picture -- "but not in ice skating." Dick liked his "vim" and "vigor" but advised him, "You don't need to stick your tongue out when you're doing a death spiral."

Technical score: 26 (9, 9, 8)
Artistic score: 26 (9, 8, 9)

Leaderboard for this week and last week:

Rebecca & Fred: 119
Jonny & Brooke: 114
Bethenny & Ethan: 88

The 'Skating With the Stars' finale airs Tuesday at 8PM ET on ABC.

I won't bother watching the finale. I'm shocked. There's no way "plastic face" as my 6 year old son put it, should have won. She stinks. It's SKATING not a popularity contest. And that is the only reason Bethany and Ethan moved on.
