'Skating With the Stars' Finale Recap: Season 1 Winner Is Crowned

by Sharon Knolle, posted Dec 22nd 2010 11:00AM
'Skating With the Stars'The first-ever 'Skating With the Stars' champ was named tonight and awarded a pair of golden skates.

Judge Johnny Weir opened up the show with a "fabulous" (to quote host Vernon Kay) caged bird routine choregraphed by fellow judge Laurie Ann Gibson.

Among the returning skaters, third place Jonny Moseley seemed to have entirely lost his mojo, stumbling several times during his routine, but finishing with a smile.

So, who took home the golden skates -- soap star Rebecca Budig or reality queen Bethenny Frankel?

The winner is... Rebecca Budig! "I'm shocked, really I am," the soap star said. "I owe all of this to [partner] Fred, who is an unbelievable skater."

"Rebecca totally deserves it. She should be a real ice skater," second-placer Bethenny said. She qualified her loss by saying, "I did take on too much, but when you do that, you have to just push that much harder. It was really a very, very challenging, very rewarding experience."

Bethenny Frankel and Ethan Burgess
For their last performance, the pair were asked to do a "re-skate," repeating one of their earlier routines. Bethenny chose 'Round and Round,' their first skate, with a few more lifts and Bethenny hoping to be "looser" than her first attempt. Weir, who's had his issues with Bethenny and her bad attitude, said, "I thank your fans so much for voting you into this final and letting me see you skate your best. That was really thrilling." Laurie Ann raved about her transformation and her showmanship and handed Bethenny her first and only 10.

Technical score: 23 (8, 7, 8)
Artistic score: 28 (10, 9, 9)

Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak
Rebecca chose to recreate the fast-paced 'Hot and Cold' number from week 2, even though it was the one in which she injured her wrist during rehearsal. The wrist still plagues her, but the routine earned her raves and a perfect 10 from all three judges in both the technical and artistic category for a perfect 60.

Yeah, the right woman won without a doubt.

The finale was good. I think it was the best episode of the season, to be honest. It would be interesting to see if the producer's could make the show better next season, but I personally don't think that it will return for another season.
