Could '16 and Pregnant' Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy?
One of the biggest criticisms from opponents of MTV's docu-series '16 and Pregnant,' which follows high school-age girls as they prepare to become mothers, is that it glamorizes teen pregnancy. But according to a new theory from the Christian Science Monitor, the show is actually doing the exact opposite.A new report from the National Campaign notes that although teens view parental influence as the number one factor in preventing teen pregnancy, an astonishing 82 percent say '16 and Pregnant' "helps them better understand the challenges of teen pregnancy and parenthood -- and why they should avoid it."
"Entertainment media is one of the nation's favorite punching bags, but we have to acknowledge that when we're talking about teen pregnancies media can be and often is a force for good," said Bill Albert, a spokesman for the National Campaign.
"Some critics say these shows glamorize teen pregnancy," he continued, "but our survey data shows that's not the case -- that not only do they not glamorize it, but teens who have seen it suggest it makes the realities of teen parenthood more real to them."
A new study from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control released yesterday showed that the teen birth rate has hit a record low, declining 6 percent in 2009.
The most recent season of '16 and Pregnant' ended Tuesday night with a 90-minute special about a girl who decided to give her child up for adoption. MTV will air another special on Tue., Dec. 28 about abortion, where a past '16 and Pregnant' mom who's pregnant again will discuss the topic with Dr. Drew Pinsky. MTV promises both sides of the issue will be examined fairly.
