Could '16 and Pregnant' Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy?

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 23rd 2010 2:00PM
'16 and Pregnant'One of the biggest criticisms from opponents of MTV's docu-series '16 and Pregnant,' which follows high school-age girls as they prepare to become mothers, is that it glamorizes teen pregnancy. But according to a new theory from the Christian Science Monitor, the show is actually doing the exact opposite.

A new report from the National Campaign notes that although teens view parental influence as the number one factor in preventing teen pregnancy, an astonishing 82 percent say '16 and Pregnant' "helps them better understand the challenges of teen pregnancy and parenthood -- and why they should avoid it."

"Entertainment media is one of the nation's favorite punching bags, but we have to acknowledge that when we're talking about teen pregnancies media can be and often is a force for good," said Bill Albert, a spokesman for the National Campaign.

"Some critics say these shows glamorize teen pregnancy," he continued, "but our survey data shows that's not the case -- that not only do they not glamorize it, but teens who have seen it suggest it makes the realities of teen parenthood more real to them."

A new study from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control released yesterday showed that the teen birth rate has hit a record low, declining 6 percent in 2009.

The most recent season of '16 and Pregnant' ended Tuesday night with a 90-minute special about a girl who decided to give her child up for adoption. MTV will air another special on Tue., Dec. 28 about abortion, where a past '16 and Pregnant' mom who's pregnant again will discuss the topic with Dr. Drew Pinsky. MTV promises both sides of the issue will be examined fairly.

Tell us: What do you think about the new study?

cfardella12 did you not see "no easy decision" special it was ALL about abortion so YES they have dicussed it. They spent about two hours doing so. But it is MURDER! I'd much rather the teens take responsibility for their actions or give their baby up for adoption instead of KILLING it. And yes they do dicuss adoption A LOT considering Catelynn did it and she was on teen mom so it was dicussed quite a bit.

Why is abortion never discussed as an option for teen moms? If this show is to educate and show young girls the hardships of teen pregnancy, they should at least have a psa or a doctor or SOMEONE mention abortion. It isn't the right decision for everyone but this show makes it seem like these girls have no other options than to keep the baby. Once in a while they discuss adoption, but they don't even discuss that enough either!

16 & Pregnant makes getting pregnant look like an absolute nightmare. Kinda obvious, but apparently young people need to see how bad it can get "for people like them" to fully get the picture. It's pretty cool reading it's increasing safe sex!

As a girl who's only a few years older than the ones in the show, I must say that every time I watch I am reminded a thousand times why I use condoms with boyfriend. Always. Some teens may be dumb, but even the dumb ones are not SO dumb as to consciously forgo using protection in order to see their face on Us Weekly a year later.

The show itself can get dull after viewing it too many times because the story is the exact same, except with different names and towns: girl gets pregnant, girl wants boyfriend to man up when the baby is born, girl stressed about being home 24/7 AND not going to college, girl decides she will somehow prevail once she realizes her boyfriend is still an immature teenager with no job who would rather play Call of Duty than change diapers.

It does indeed glamorize the whole teen pregnancy, but it's not intentional. The problem is the show is not documentary but a reality show with focus of being entertaining.

Fact of the matter, the program being MTV is part the problem. Nothing on that station is remotely intentionally educational.

Of course most teens are not going to listen, unless it's hip and it doesn't hit you over the head with morals.

I think it is a terrible show to have on. I also believe it will cause teens to try and get pregnant to get on the show too. Teenagers don't have the mentality to understand just how hard it is caring for a child (I have teen children and they all have teen friends and cousins, so I am well aware of what they think), they only understand that because of teen pregnancy, these teens are now "famous". Also, unfortunately, these same teens are risking life threatening sexually transmitted diseases while having sex. I am all for sex education and parents talking one on one to their children about sex and its consequences but this is the WRONG way to go about it teaching teens a "life lesson".

If you're making that comment it probably means that you can only form an opinion by watching Beck, O'Reilly, or Limbaugh.

According to Keith Olbermann, the answer is NO! In fact, he should be putting this show on his 'Worst' list fairly soon.

On the other hand, teenagers may watch this series and decide that getting pregnant at 16 is a good way to get on TV and become a 15-minute celebrity.

This is one of those things that has a yes and no answer to it. While the show probably does a good job of showing how hard it is to go through a teen pregnancy (Never seen it, never will), it's the magazine media that completely counters the message MTV is trying to send.

I work at a grocery store and I cannot even count how many times a week I see one of these stupid teen moms on the covers with headlines like "[teen mom] is BROKE" "[teen mom] is pregnant again!" Hell I think one of the recent ones I saw was of this kid showing off her twin girls.

You know what, now that I think about it MTV really is sending out the wrong message by airing this show. It all comes down to this: "Oh noes, I'm 16 years old and pregnant, what am I going to do? oh i'll sell my story to MTV so they can air it then after that's over I'll whore myself to magazines to keep me in cash a little while longer. I'll show kids everywhere that being a teen mom isn't so hard after all."
