Crazy Lifts and High-Flying Stunts on 'Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 27th 2010 1:19AM
Elena Leonova & Andre Khvalko, 'Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular'Here's something you won't see on 'Skating With the Stars.' For the holiday weekend, 'Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular' (Sun., 4PM on NBC) offered some truly awe-inspiring and breathtaking ice skating. These are stunts and moves you won't generally see even in Olympic or competitive skating.

Removing the requirements of the competitive aspect, professional skaters Andrei Khvalko and Elena Leonova put on a show of epic proportions. Khvalko was so strong and impressive, while Leonova spent almost as much time with her feet in the air as she did on the ice.

At several points during the routine, the pair were near disaster. Leonova particularly came so close to several concussions throughout, which added to the breathtaking part as we gasped in anticipation/fear that she would come off the ice on a stretcher.

Instead, the pair were poised and so beautifully confident that we were left with our jaws on the ground. It was a routine that could make even the staunchest anti-skating advocates reconsider their stance, and a true holiday spectacle.

I watched this with great disappointment as there was too much showing of Heart and not enough of the skaters. I know we missed alot of excitment most times they went back to skaters after a stunt was performed. Other than that, when Heart wasn't playing, they showed the whole routine. I love Heart and was excited to know they were a part of this, but come-on it was a skating spactular not Heart spactular!!

I've been a fan of Brian Boitano's since before he & Canadian Brian Orser went toe to toe against each other in Canada at the winter olympics, but was sur- prised at his remarks about the most recent "Skating with the Stars". Them not gonna be any good in that short of a period of time to learn to do what pro skaters took years to learn. Well I watched the show & was VERY impressed at how well all got to actually become "skaters" at the end! Sure not good as pros! But interesting to watch & even better than the 1st attempt at this type of show that Canadian Lloyd Eisner was in, maybe & that one was interesting too. I've been on ice skates a few times & "it ain't easy"!!!!

While I'm normally tuned into most skating - competition and exhibition - after the first very few minutes of this 'spectacular' I turned it off due to the music. While these shows occasionally do have great music like his last one, this one was way too noisy and not really music. My husband commented he was likely trying to draw the young people but hey, its people of our age group that were cheering for him and the others on the show when they were competing (and for Brian from his home town). Some thought needs to be taken here.
