'Million Dollar Money Drop' Allows Post-it Couple to Compete Again
After a couple lost $800,000 on Fox's new game show 'Million Dollar Money Drop' last week, Internet research proved their answer about when Post-it notes were introduced -- deemed incorrect on the show -- was actually correct. Though the network and producers at first stood by their erroneous answer, executive producer Jeff Apploff now confirms that the couple will be allowed to compete again."Unfortunately, the information our research department originally obtained from 3M regarding when Post-it notes were first sold was incomplete. As a result of new information we have received from 3M, we feel it is only fair to give our contestants, Gabe and Brittany, another shot to play 'Million Dollar Money Drop' even though this question was not the deciding question in their game," Apploff said in a statement released on Friday.
The controversial question involved deciding which product was first sold in stores -- the Sony Walkman or the Post-it note. While the Walkman was introduced in 1979, the show maintained that Post-its weren't sold until 1980. However, as astute bloggers pointed out -- and Fox now admits -- Post-its were test-marketed beginning in 1977.
In the statement, Apploff confirmed that the information the show's fact-checkers received from 3M, which makes Post-its, was incorrect. "The revised information regarding the Post-it is as follows: the product was originally tested for sale in four cities under the name 'Press 'N Peel' in 1977, sold as 'Post-its' in 1979 when the rollout introduction began and sold nationwide in 1980. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the viewers who brought this to our attention, and we're thrilled to give Gabe and Brittany the opportunity to return to play the game."
Tell us: Do you think 'Million Dollar Money Drop' did the right thing? Why do you think it took the show so long to admit its error?
