'Million Dollar Money Drop' Allows Post-it Couple to Compete Again

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 27th 2010 10:00AM
'Million Dollar Money Drop'After a couple lost $800,000 on Fox's new game show 'Million Dollar Money Drop' last week, Internet research proved their answer about when Post-it notes were introduced -- deemed incorrect on the show -- was actually correct. Though the network and producers at first stood by their erroneous answer, executive producer Jeff Apploff now confirms that the couple will be allowed to compete again.

"Unfortunately, the information our research department originally obtained from 3M regarding when Post-it notes were first sold was incomplete. As a result of new information we have received from 3M, we feel it is only fair to give our contestants, Gabe and Brittany, another shot to play 'Million Dollar Money Drop' even though this question was not the deciding question in their game," Apploff said in a statement released on Friday.

The controversial question involved deciding which product was first sold in stores -- the Sony Walkman or the Post-it note. While the Walkman was introduced in 1979, the show maintained that Post-its weren't sold until 1980. However, as astute bloggers pointed out -- and Fox now admits -- Post-its were test-marketed beginning in 1977.

In the statement, Apploff confirmed that the information the show's fact-checkers received from 3M, which makes Post-its, was incorrect. "The revised information regarding the Post-it is as follows: the product was originally tested for sale in four cities under the name 'Press 'N Peel' in 1977, sold as 'Post-its' in 1979 when the rollout introduction began and sold nationwide in 1980. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the viewers who brought this to our attention, and we're thrilled to give Gabe and Brittany the opportunity to return to play the game."

Tell us: Do you think 'Million Dollar Money Drop' did the right thing? Why do you think it took the show so long to admit its error?

What a cop out.... the show is a joke. They should not have to compete again. THEY WON - GIVE THEM THE CASH. No crap with competing again. It's just a chance the show wants for them to loose and not have to pay out. LAWYER UP GUYS and get you cash!

The point is that if something is sold under a different name then technically its not the correct answer. Fox had their out right there they could have said well technically they werent the first sold but they didmt they invited them back to compete again. Fox does not need to hand over 800k to them just let them play again its simple as that

Cut me a break, even bad publicity is good, it's a set up. The show that makes my blood boil is with Howie Mandel, he torments contestants about there bets and the amount they may take home, I guess the biggest winner dosn't near his salarie, and does he know each briefcase broad as intimately as to know each by first name?

Once the 800 thousand dollars dropped, the couple's hopes were dashed and it really messed up their mental bearings. Their ability to think rationally was severely hampered and subsequently, they ended up making a grave mistake on the last question. Give them the money just to show good faith and be done with it. The show causes too much stress to have to repeat it with the hopes of winning. I believe the show will intentionally present them with such hard questions next time that they will lose again. I don't think I would go on the show again. Its just too stressful!

This is kind of a tough predicament, the question was, what hit the market first the Sony walkman or post-it notes?

The prototype of the post-it notes came out in 1977 named the peel and press, the post-it notes did not actually sell on the market as post-it notes until 1980.

It's really a matter of technicality; the researchers for the questions should really have a black and white answer instead of a maybe answer.

I believe the couple should have won that question but maybe (if they decide to) will do great on their second chance.

Fox is still behaving immorally -- backing out of their obligation to pay off for a correct answer. What a cheap and snarky way for a zillionaire corporation to behave. Fox should give the contestants the $800,000 they rightfully earned and let the couple decide whether they want to go on with the game. There are too many ways Fox can rig the difficulty of the questions on a new competition to avoid paying off. Who can trust them for a fair game after this?

What a bunch of frauds. I'll bet that bunch of Fox schemers had it figured that no matter what the couple said, they would be called wrong. Only they didn't figure on having a viewer with an ounce of integrity. Now, they offer the couple another chance. What are the chances that they attempt another ploy to keep that couple from winning?
