'Teen Mom' Star Amber Portwood Charged With Felony Domestic Battery

by Jean Bentley, posted Dec 27th 2010 5:15PM
Amber PortwoodThe law is finally catching up to 'Teen Mom' star Amber Portwood.

Indiana prosecutors formally charged the reality star today with two felony counts of domestic battery, one felony count of neglect of a dependent and one misdemeanor of domestic violence and battery, E! Online reports.

Law enforcement became involved in Portwood's case after MTV camera crews filmed her hitting her ex-fiance, Gary Shirley, in front of their young daughter. The footage aired on 'Teen Mom,' and was subpoenaed from MTV after Indiana authorities received complaints from Child Protective Services.

Portwood's brother, Shawn, told E! that Amber stayed with him last night while Leah stayed at Shirley's house. "We were supposed to be having Christmas with my mom today, but plans have changed somewhat," he said. "Gary is supposed to bring Amber to the courthouse today. If need be, he will be the one posting bail as well. Amber is very nervous. She is waiting for her lawyer to call her back. The paparazzi are swarming her house."

Portwood faces up to three years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

oh i love it. it's about friggin time. put that pig in prison for the 3 years and charge her fines up the ying yang. i'm sooooooooo glad the police and prosecutors got heavily involved in this because you know that wimp gary wouldn't have even come close to pressing charges. m tv should also be sued for standing there taping a show while a person was getting punched in the face by someone as hard as they could. personally, i would have beat the shiat out of her right then but that sissy gary just stood there, with his iq that hovers around 70, and did nothing. well, too bad gary, now the police have got your disgusting, perverted, piece of trash of a gal friend all nice and cozy in an 8 by 11 cell.

I can understand making sure she makes it to the courthouse. That just makes sense to me, and it makes sense that the father of the baby wouldn't want the mother to foolishly let herself become a fugative or some such. The posting bail? Ehh, I wouldn't do that if I were in his shoes. Domestic abuse is wrong, don't matter which of them is doing the abusing.

These reality shows about teen pregnancies is not really reality.
Realty is being pregnant at 16 and being thrown out on the street by my mother, because I refused to have an abortion. Reality is me having to go from pillow to pole because: 1. My then boyfriend sister told me to leave in my fourth month of pregnancy because she did not drive nor did she have car.
2. When I was in my 7 month of pregnancy; my grandmother told me I had to find somewhere else to live because she did not drive at night.
3. Being told that I could not continue my education because this bigot of a princple stated: since I could no longer fit into a desk I could no longer attend school.
4. During childbirth I was held down by the staff securing my wrists and ankles with leather cuffs and then taking my baby to the nursery without showing him to me nor allowing me to hold him; even though I was not giving him up for adoption. In recovery my boyfriend came in to tell me he looks just like him.
How is this for REALITY?
These events are true.
These events occured from 1976-1977.

Why on EARTH is GARY taking her to the courthouse and posting her bail?? Is that really true? If so, what an enabler!

well of course he'd take her to the courthouse! have u watched this show? this guy is the biggest wimp i've ever seen in my entire life...and i've seen a few. he let this pig punch him in the face as hard as she could and did nothing. if that doesn't just scream "here, pussy, pussy...here, pussy, pussy"..i really don't know what does. if that gal tried that with me she'd STILL be in the hospital.

Why do the networks INSIST on calling these low-lifes "reality stars?" They are not stars - they are an embarrassment to the American public!

she does not deserve a beautiful baby like that, and as much as i have watched the show i have never seen gary abuse her in any way....he DID act a little too imature to be a father before Leah was born, but i am not so sure now....she SHOULD spend 3 years behind bars, then maybe just maybe she would learn that hitting is NEVER acceptable especially in front of children.....

She's a spoiled brat who's used to having her way and when she can't have what she wants, she goes into fits of rage. She needs to be taught a lesson. She deserves exactly what she's getting....if ever there was an unfit mother....she's a perfect example. I wonder if she'll get early release because of over crowded conditions like Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan?

i'm sure she'll get out early, if the pig even goes at all. this country's criminal system is so unbelievably ignorant, naive, wimpy, and in denial, that it's actually embarrassing to live here. this country still seems to think that women are somehow incapable of doing anything wrong. it's like pulling teeth to get a prosecutor to charge a woman here, and it's even harder to get an idiotic judge to put one in prison.
