The Key to the City on 'American Chopper' (VIDEO)
The tradition of giving a guest the "key to the city" dates back to medieval times -- when cities were surrounded by walls, and you needed an actual key for entry. On the new 'American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior' (Mon., 9PM ET on Discovery), Paul Teutul, Jr., got the key to the city of Asheville, North Carolina. And the reason that he received this honor? It was because he built a totally rad motorcycle, apparently. These days, getting the key to a city is totally symbolic. And anyway, the one key that Junior really needs ... is the key to his father's heart. (Or is that too profound?)
After all, 'Senior vs. Junior' is about the feud between Junior and his dad, Paul, Sr. -- the father has kicked his son out of the family bike-making business. So even though Junior got cheers from the crowd of 400,000 Carolinians, he still must be imagining the disapproving specter of his dear old dad looming behind him.
... Oh well. At least Junior got his fleeting cheers. "Sic transit gloria mundi," as they might say in medieval times. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity. (Or is that too profound again?)
(Also, just as a side-note, the "key to the city" used to be given to armies, knights, and emperors. Now we give it to people who build motorcycles. It's a minor downgrade, of sorts. ... We're just saying.)
