In real life, Ferguson is openly gay and Stonestreet is "openly straight," Ferguson said on 'Lopez Tonight' (weeknights, 12AM ET on TBS). "He is the straightest guy you could possibly meet, so it's just a testament to his acting ability."

"Do you ever see him and think, 'Oh, that's too gay'?" asked the host. Well, when Stonestreet auditioned for the role, he did a test scene with Ferguson. "Eric actually did a [zig-zag] Z snap in the audition, and I was like, 'That's too gay.'" At least he still got the role.
