Showtime Won't Air 'Kennedys' Miniseries Either
It's looking more and more like a direct-to-DVD release for the History Channel's controversial 'Kennedys' miniseries. The options are narrowing for an American television debut now that Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Showtime has decided not to buy the eight-part movie about the political dynasty. After History announced it wouldn't air the miniseries, Showtime was the most buzzed-about option. Starz and FX bowed out of the running yesterday.
Reports earlier this week speculated that Caroline Kennedy and Maria Shriver were behind History's decision to pull the series, and with their connections, Disney- and NBC Universal-ownedn stations are most likely out as well.
In a statement earlier this week, 'Kennedys' co-producers Muse Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment said, "We are proud of the work all of our talent put into the making of 'The Kennedys' and the painstaking efforts that went into creating a drama that is compelling while rich in historic detail. Although we regret this does not fit into the History Channel's plans, we are confident that television viewers in the United States will join viewers from around the world in having an opportunity to watch this series in the near future."
