'The Rockford Files' Reboot on Hold (Again)
Hot on the heels of news that Davd E. Kelley's reworking of 'Wonder Woman' has bitten the dust, we hear that the rebooted 'Rockford Files' has also been nixed. Again. At least for now.According to deadline.com, NBC has closed the book on the series for the current development season after writer David Shore found himself committed full-time to his duties on 'House.' With Shore unable to focus on 'The Rockford Files,' the project has been shelved.
The veteran Fox medical drama had planned an ambitious multi-episode arc featuring Dr. House on the road. However, when that arc was scrapped in the advanced stages, Shore had to jump in and help re-break stories for a significant portion of the season, which also recently grew larger after Fox ordered an extra episode.
However, it may not quite be the death knell for 'The Rockford Files,' as it could be revisited next season if new NBC programming chief Bob Greenblatt is interested. But, given it's not the first time the reboot has been in jeopardy, this seems unlikely. We reported back in May how NBC execs had balked at the pilot episode starring Dermot Mulroney as Jim Rockford.
Sources said then that the network had declined to pick up the show because it was too much of a remake and not enough of a reworking. It was subsequently put in re-development, with Peter Berg at the helm.
In recent years networks in search of hits have revisited many classic shows, with varying degrees of success: For every 'Battlestar Galactica' there's a 'Bionic Woman.' But reinventing 'The Rockford Files' was never going to be easy. Starring James Garner as affable private eye Jim Rockford, the series aired on NBC from 1974 to 1980 and is still shown in syndication.
Garner is so closely identified with the role that it's hard to see who could successfully replace him. And for now, at least, it won't be Dermot Mulroney.
