'The Closer' to Continue Without Kyra Sedgwick?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jan 24th 2011 7:30AM
'The Closer'Back in December the obits for 'The Closer' were being written after star Kyra Sedgwick announced the end of the series. Now, however, comes news that the farewells may have been premature, and that the drama could be carrying on without her.

'The Closer' is the most-watched basic cable series ever, and according to deadline.com, execs at TNT are unwilling to let their flagship drama go.

One of the scenarios currently being discussed at the cable network is extending the 15-episode (Final) Season 7 to 21 episodes.

However, adding an extra six episodes is contingent on a deal with Sedgwick. Given she's reportedly the one who decided to end the series in the first place, it could be an uphill battle to persuade her to carry on.

TNT is also said to be mulling over a nine-episode order for a new series, either 'The Closer' without Sedgwick, or a spin-off series featuring characters from 'The Closer' in a new setting. It's rumored that Mary McDonnell could be in the picture to star in either scenario, with her character Capt. Sharon Raydor stepping up after Sedgwick goes.

Although the latter option would probably be a bit easier to pull off because Sedgwick plays the eponymous 'Closer', a previous spin-off -- 'The Fixer' -- never got off the ground.

Sedgwick's contract is up at the end of Season 7, but if she were to be persuaded into making a few more episodes they could be used to segue into the new show without her, thus giving it a chance of success. But as she's made no secret of her desire to move on after Season 7 wraps up, it remains to be seen if she will agree to a new deal.

Please try to do somehting other than letting her leave the show. I'm one of the many older persons who live for this show day & night. There's nothing but gabage on TV these days & nothing to entertain or learn from. I'm still in tears about the absence of THE WEST WING on the television screen. Kyra is The Closer, a presence you just can't kick to the curb & call IT a day. I love the entie cast & give kudoes to all. At the end of the last scene, it's still the Closer doing the do & having everyone giving praise or trying to figure what just hit them. MY GIRL, talking about MYGIRL. Love her, hold on to her. Dee

I really feel there can be a successful segue to The Closer without Kyra. One thing is for sure, those in control of the series, have has plenty of time to plan a segue before now. I am sure Kyra anounced her departure in plenty of time for those writing to get us ready for Kyra's departure. Although, I must say, I just love Kyra's character and the relationships each have built during each season. Maybe they can work in "Brenda and Fritz's departure from the department because she is pregnant; Fritz gets promoted and they must relocate to a new city. Then maybe have a few episodes where the "old crew" connect with Fritz & Brenda" there are a number of ways, I feel they can keep the current staff relationships going. For instance, Gabriel & Det. Daniels....play off that break up. Det. Sanchez....he was trying to keep that little boy that was abused and finally his real mother was located and the episode ended with Sanchez asking the mother out to eat...there are a lot of areas in which I would like to see them build on. I would still watch those other relationships grow. Not to mention Provenza and Flynn's unique relationship as partners. Captain Taylor as annoying as they have portrayed him and Captain Raydor. I could go on and on.

The Closer indeed one of the best drams on TV not only because of Kyra but the entire cast is first rate. Without Kyra it might suceed because of the rest of the cast.

I can't think of a single actor that left a hit show and did anything later! What did she do before that would make her think there will be another hit any time soon? Its not like she is getting any younger and her husband is making commercials mocking himself since they lost there money two years ago!

Let's see, David Caruso left NYPD BLUE. Did he do anything later? Oh yeah. CSI MIAMI.

Without Kyra the show would not be worth watching. Her southern charm got the program off the ground. The producers and exceutives need to try and keep her on the show.

KEEP KYRA
KEEP KYRA
KEEP KYRA
