Sarah Michelle Gellar's New Pilot, 'The Ringer,' Is 'An Edgy Thriller'

Sarah Michelle GellarLast week we reported that Sarah Michelle Gellar was planning her TV comeback with a new drama, 'The Ringer.' Now, the producer of the pilot has revealed more details about what he describes as the "edgy thriller."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Peter Traugott dished on details of the pilot and explained how they manged to talk Gellar into returning to a network TV series.

'The Ringer,' says Traugott, is "an edgy thriller about redemption and about revenge. There's a point of view of two twin sisters [Bridget and Siobhan] who grew apart over a tragedy in their past. And one seeks redemption and the other one seeks revenge."

Bridget is seeking redemption, and has had a troubled life. When her "fancy pants" twin sister, Siobhan, dies in a boating accident she takes over her life, only to discover that there's a hit out on her sibling. Gellar will play both parts and Traugott says viewers will get to see "a lot of different layers" to her character(s).

The drama is the creation of former 'Supernatural' writers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder and, according to Traugott, their script was the main reason Gellar jumped at the chance to play the dual roles of both twins. Although she'd been burned by her last foray into pilot territory with the unsuccessful 'The Wonderful Maladys' for HBO in 2009, the former 'Buffy' star was still looking to make her TV comeback on a cable, not a network, show.

However, Traugott said, "This was a spec script that we had found ... by these young writers and we flipped for it. Sarah's manager got it to her, and she fell in love with the piece, too. ... When CBS read this thing and flipped for it and loved Sarah for it, that kind of started her thinking about being more open-minded to doing network because of the subject matter and this piece that she was so excited about."

And fear not, 'Buffy' fans -- Traugott promised that 'The Ringer' will have something for you too. "Whatever [Gellar] does in TV, she does something that her fans who had grown up loving 'Buffy' will also be excited about. And we think this show has that quality to it."

Pre-production on 'The Ringer' is already underway, with producers looking to attach a cast and director to the project. Traugott says he hopes to start shooting sometime in March.
