CW Delays 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' Return, Plus Giveaway Update

by Chris Harnick, posted Jan 27th 2011 5:48PM
SupernaturalBad news guys, The CW has delayed the return of 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville.' Instead of returning Jan. 28, new episodes of the CW dramas will return Feb. 4.

Why? That remains to be seen. The CW will re-air the Jan. 27 episodes of 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'Nikita' on Friday.

On Wed., Feb. 2 the network will air the 'Supernatural' episode 'Appointment in Samarra' and the 'Smallville' episode 'Icarus,' instead of reruns of 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'Nikita.'

Because of the change of schedule, we'll be extending our CW swag giveaway until Fri., Feb. 11.

Update from Mo Ryan: Why all the scheduling shenanigans? 'American Idol' is the culprit, not surprisingly. Read on for more...

A CW spokesperson said Thursday that the network wants to give 'The Vampire Diaries,' the CW's top series, more exposure when the returns from its winter break. Thus the decision to air it both Thursday (when it'll go up against 'Idol') and Friday (when fans who missed 'TVD' and 'Nikita' will be able to catch up with those shows). Another reason offered for the double airings of those dramas: There are CW pre-emptions Thursday in Chicago and Baltimore.

We know, we know: 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' fans were psyched for those shows' returns, and now they have to wait another week. It's no fun that these switcheroos were unveiled at the last minute, but sometimes TV's scheduling gods are capricious.

I was so pissed about SPN and SV not being on I have been watching those shows since the beginning and had been looking forward to them for 2 months. I like TVD and Nikita also but if you can't be bothered to watch them on Thursday night cuz of stupid ass american idol(which should have been cancelled a long time ago) then you dont need to watch them anyway. CW head exec. Dawn Ostroff suck and should have been fired a long time ago and the never should have merged upn and the wb they should have just stayed 2 different station cuz the WB was way better than the CW.

It's not the first time and it won't be the last time they will do this.
SPN/SV facebook pages weren't updated from 2 weeks ago, and after tonight you managed to get about 5000 comments in one day after what happened last night.
CW will eventually loose a lot of fans and will realize that they didn't advertise and focus on what was important.
i`m really disappointed that the producers/directors from CW aren't checking facebook once in a while so they can see exactly how things are.
Oh and that move CW pulled last night with 2 shows that were already aired is not a good signal for the fans.
even if TVD is the most viewed show on the network, from where i`m standing ....the story got really messed up in the last 5-6 episodes and lost it's original track, so good luck on a fail road.
oh... and even my cat was sad when it saw nikita and TVD on.

I was very disappointed last night when Supernatural didn't return as promised. Nothing on to explain it, just promises that it will now return next week. Should I believe them?? I've sat through the repeats just because I love the show so much. But the CW kept hyping the return of the show & then just yanked it last minute, doesn't show much respect for their viewers. I know that I, as a loyal viewer, felt very dis-respected! CW, with all the problems that you've had, you would think that you would care & show more respect for the fan-base that you do have. Shame on you!

Quite honestly, anyone trying to follow a TV show these days is doomed to frustration. If it is popular, it will be moved. If you follow it when it is moved, it will be moved again. The "good" shows (anything that gets above dismal in ratings..) are used to pull you into watching newer, often horrible shows that can't pull their own audiences. Those 3rd rate shows usually get the "prime" hours or good spots because they can't justify even being on the air.
Typical TV audiences want "shock" shows that have the same old, hacknied writers using the same tried-and-true-tired plots and devices for the 8th or 20th time, but this time with even more bust hanging out or an even shorter skirt. When someone comes up with a new premise, the writers leave or run out of steam, and even the best actors need real scripts to guide the story.
All-in-all, find other entertainment..

On another note, I scan AOL three times a day. This story was not on my menu, and there was nothing on the CW site explaining anything.

What the Hell does American Idol have to do with this stupid schedule change? That show does not air on Thursday or Friday. I think it is disrepsectful to mislead fans and hype the return of its series with a January 28 air date only to yank it with no warning. When I saw that they were repeating the previous night's episode of Vampire Diaries instead of Smalleville, I called the local affiliate. They were just as confused as I was and were trying to get some answers for the fans. So tell me again that you let people know. As always, the viewers are not considered. Then, they told my affiliate that they were airing the missing episodes next Wednesday. Wrong again, you get repeats instead. And Networks wonder why shows lose the audience.. It was bad enough they moved the shows to Friday. This is really poor planning after depriving fans of the shows for nearly two months. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.

Hopefully all of us that are as annoyed with the CW for making this last minute switch TURNED OFF the CW last night. This sends a signal to their magical rating reports that we are ticked about it. I used to watch the CW prime time nearly every night. I didn't even bother trying out new shows on the other channels. Now the only thing I watch is Smallville, Supernatural and Gossip Girl. I agree with one poster. I am sick and tired of getting caught up in a new show to only have it moved to a night where I have school or another show I like, or yanked completely. I have purposely weened myself off the CW over the last 5 years by not watching the new shows they put on. Thou I did get hooked on Gossip Girl. I used to watch OTH every week, but they kept moving the night it was on to the night I took classes (so I wouldn't miss it). Then several of the base characters left and I just lost interest. Once Smallville ends I will be down to 2 shows. CW what does that tell you....we're tired of your switcheroos.

After reading today of why smallville and supernatural was not aired the CW could have put a brief message at 8 or before the shows started. just like everybody i got all done to watch my favorite shows and what did i see at 8 TVD and Nikita my family just laughed at my expression of disbelief that the shows were not on. I have stay with these two shows since their first episode and changes througout the years on time slots and was furious that they were not on. CW have more respect of the fans because lets face it these two have kept you in the air for longer.

Why do you people even bother with network tv anymore.....just wait and buy the DVD sets then you can watch whenever you want...not when some corporate executive wants you to watch...
