At 'The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards' (Sun., 8PM on TBS), Betty White scored a bit of an upset win in the category of "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series." Not because White isn't hilariously brilliant, but because she was up against awards show favorites Tina Fey, Edie Falco, Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara. It was a huge coup for TV Land, which found a star vehicle for the 89-year old actress when she joined the cast of 'Hot in Cleveland.'
Just as she's done throughout her career, she quickly turned her role of Elka Ostrovsky into one of television's most outrageous, surprising and memorable characters.
"We fell in love the first day we worked together and it's still like that," White said in her acceptance speech of her co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick.
White opted for class this time around, giving a heartfelt speech about the joy she's found on the set of 'Hot in Cleveland,' and with her fellow castmates who are "more than family."
She did slip a bit when her hand caressed the rear end of the Actor statuette. A soft "ooh" was all she said, but we all know White by now. That "ooh" spoke volumes, and was enough to get the crowd laughing.
One thing White's learned after all those years in the business is perfect comedic timing. That and how to be classy and funny, crude and sophisticated. She just so charming, she could probably get away with anything at this point.
