'The Kennedys' to Air on ReelzChannel April 3
'The Kennedys' miniseries will finally be seen on April 3 ... on ReelzChannel.Never heard of the four-year-old channel? You're not alone.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the controversial miniseries ended its three weeks of limbo with a big financial commitment from Reelz, a Minnesota-based Hubbard Communications property.
"We think it will drive ratings and put a spotlight on this network that has never been on it before," Steve Hubbard, CEO of Hubbard Communications, told the Hollywood Reporter. "We're going to do a full-blown marketing campaign."
Reelz plans an aggressive marketing campaign that includes in-theater ads, TV commercials and online and print components.
In January, the History channel canceled the miniseries starring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear.
"Upon completion of the production of 'The Kennedys,' History has decided not to air the eight-part miniseries," a rep for the network told the Hollywood Reporter in a statement. "After viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded that although the film is produced and acted with the highest-quality auspices, the dramatic license the series takes is not suitable for the History brand."
Networks such as FX and Showtime considered picking up the project but ultimately passed. Rumors swirled that the Kennedy family had a hand in History's cancellation of the project, but nothing was ever confirmed.
Reelz can be found in more than 60 million homes across cable providers. "One of the benefits of being an independent network is that you can be an independent voice and you don't have to worry about corporate pressure or political pressure," Hubbard said. "This is a project that deserves to be seen."
