'American Idol' Auditions: Austin Recap

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 2nd 2011 10:04PM
'American Idol's' third visit to the Texas capital in 10 seasons was full of surprises, shenanigans and second chances.

The hour started with a much hyped apology (via Ryan Seacrest's Twitter account) from Steven Tyler that amounted to little more than a lame joke. Yes, we know Steven has a potty mouth and a well-earned reputation for rather uncouth antics, but after all the debate over the portrayal of Milwaukee contestant Chris Medina's brain-damaged fiancee, many thought the mea culpa might have something to do with that. Instead, we got to watch Steven mouth the F-bomb. Oh, 'Idol,' after 10 years, you still don't realize that humor is not your strong suit.

Getting down to business, Austin offered up a number of future Top 40'ers, which you can read about here if you're up for some spoiling. And it seems with Simon Cowell off the bench, the judges are all about giving those who let nerves get the best of them a second chance. Case in point: 17-year-old British expat Hollie Cavanagh. The teen's first attempt at an Etta James' classic "was all over the place," according to Steven. Randy Jackson accused Cavanagh of hitting something like five different keys during her performance. Jennifer Lopez offered the shaken and tearful teen a second chance, and she nailed it with Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb,'thus earning a ticket to Hollywood.

Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Texas audition episode without a genuine cowboy in the house. Twenty-three-year-old rancher John Wayne Schulz filled the quota nicely with his movie star good looks and well-received rendition of Brooks & Dunn's 'Believe.' Unlike other self-styled country singers we've seen so far (Milwaukee's Scotty McCreary comes to mind), Schulz' vocals have the potential to break out of country, should the challenge arise. Though we've been told there won't be as much pressure on this year's contestants to stretch outside their chosen genres.

Seventeen-year-old student and Ryan Seacrest obsessive Courtney Penry was played up as another gag contestant. But the teen demonstrated talents beyond stalking Seacrest and doing a mean Chicken Dance, with her take on Sugarland's 'Stay.' Steven cited Penry's "star quality," while J.Lo said the teen's vocals "had parts that are really strong points and parts that had weaknesses." Randy said no, despite acknowledging her "pretty good" vocals, but J.Lo and Steven saw the girl -- who named Ryan Seacrest "the sexiest man alive" -- through to Hollywood.

After a parade of pranksters and tone deaf contestants (including a woman in an armadillo costume), a trio of solid singers came through. Watch out for rocker Caleb Johnson, who nailed a rather unusual audition choice in Soundgarden's 'Rusty Cage.' Shauntel Campos impressed the judges with a Bill Withers' classic and Alex Carr earned high praise for his spot-on take on Luther Vandross' 'A House Is Not a Home.' I only wish we got to see more of these three and less of the armadillo girl.

Austin also brought forth another power couple in 19-year-old suit salesman Nick Fink and 21-year-old receptionist Jacquelin Dunford. Both earned spots in Hollywood, despite their schmaltzy gimmick.

But the two biggest stand-outs of the night have to be 20-year-old Tennessean Janelle Arthur and 19-year-old Californian Casey Abrams. Arthur's first stab at Duffy's 'Syrup & Honey' didn't blow the judges away, but after Steven asked for something "a little more uptempo," Arthur brought the goods with Shania Twain's 'No One Needs to Know.'

And Abrams threw the judges a curve ball when the self-described Seth Rogen lookalike walked into his audition with a melodica. But his rendition of Ray Charles' 'I Don't Need No Doctor' not only got him an instant, unanimous "yes," but also brought the trio out of their seats, dancing all the way backstage.

Sadly, I live for American Idol because my life is pretty dull right now. I don't know why AI's so addicting. I didn't get to see the girls night (work) but from the reviews I've read it soundslike Pia was a hit, although I must say that, regarding the standing ovation, there was a previous one when Adam Lambert performed once on season 8. What a short memory the judges have! This kind-of says to me that she wasn't really that good.

As far as the boys, I like Scotty because of his DEEP voice. He 's absolutely MEANT to be a country star, IMHO. His performances are so polished but natural and seemingly effortless that he could perform any country song well, especially Johnny Cash, Josh Turner, even Alan Jackson. He'd do Elvis P.'s songs great too. In fact, I think that he's SO GOOD that he's in danger of being taken for granted by everyone.

I liked many of the other boys also. Paul McDonald was great on Rod Stewart's (I think) 'Marrie Mae'. He sounded almost as though he was imitating R.S. but his moves were his own. James was GREAT...but we already have Adam Lambert. Jacob is very good, has that BIG voice, and may actually win, but his over-the-top actions don't quite agree with me. Casey has something special and different....looks, sex appeal, vocal abilities galore.

AI has a TALENTED group this year, that's for sure!

I find it kind of sad and funny at the same time that all of these comments appear in this column regarding how bad Idol is this season, and the comment that they are not watching the show, which is crazy or they would not even be commenting on it if they didn't watch the show. This season is like any other, and it is all about the contestants, not the judges. Some of the people can sing well and many more can't carry a tune at all, just like it has been for the previous nine seasons. The fact is that the show is still the highest rated show on TV (just check it out yourselves at : TV Nielsen Ratings). It has been beating all the competition each show this season, and it will most likely continue to do so. We just can't get enough Idol.

have only watched bits and pieces so far.. don't like the process of getting to the actual competition, but my guess after watching last nite, john wayne schultz will be the next american idiol!!
he has it all and would be a fabulous country music star!!

I did not watch American Idol, never will. A person I know watched and told me she could not tell the difference in the good and bad, they all stunk, as does the show and its judges. The show is a waste of time for adults to watch. All that watch it is the teeny boopers. Not for my kind of people, who buy products, by the way. Not just jump up and screem .

Don't appreciate Steven's foul mouth. It is not appropriate for this show

I really think Steve is a mistake as a judge for American Idol. He feels he has to sing with almost every person that is on A. I. to audition. At times he looks like he is on another planet. I really miss Paula and Simon. Randy is great. Who was responsible for picking Steve as well as J Lo for the American Idol judges? I have always loved to watch this program, but now that there is only Randy left from the original judges, I feel it is going downhill.
