EXCLUSIVE: Amy Smart Cast in Showtime's 'Shameless'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Feb 2nd 2011 2:00PM
'Shameless' already has its share of feisty females, but the Showtime drama is about to get one more.

Amy Smart ('Crank,' 'Smith') will appear in the final two episodes of the show's first season as Jasmine, a new friend of Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum). Fiona is the oldest sibling in the large Gallagher family, which is headed by the frequently inebriated Frank (William H. Macy). Despite taking on much of the responsibility for caring for her siblings, Fiona also has an active social life and her new friend Jasmine wants to be part of it.

Jasmine, according to Showtime, is someone Fiona knows from the neighborhood, but she's older than Fiona (in this recent interview, Rossum said Fiona's around 21). Jasmine has a daughter who is in the same class at school as Fiona's little sister, Debbie.

Fiona renews her acquaintance with Jasmine when she goes to school to help the mothers decorate for a party. "Jasmine is a little bit pushy and sexy and is a little aggressive about wanting to be friends with Fiona," according to the network's character description.

'Shameless,' which premiered Jan. 9, is doing relatively well in its debut season. TV By the Numbers says ratings for the show are on the upswing, and according to the network, the drama is Showtime's best-performing freshman drama in seven years. Sunday's episode brought in 1.45 million total viewers in two airings.

Speaking of notable Showtime casting, Kristen Bell ('Veronica Mars') has joined the cast of the network's pilot 'House of Lies,' which stars Don Cheadle as a business consultant.

While not very familiar with Ms. Smart's work, I look forward to seeing what she does and trust that she will not be disappointing, because this show's runners and casting dept. have already proved deserving of trust. That each and every actor in this large ensemble cast has been amazing is one thing... but all the guest stars have been remarkable as well. Actors must be lining up to work for a show that clearly respects (loves?) actors! Has Mr. Wells been getting calls from John Lithgow's agents?

Shameless is pretty good......William H. Macy's character is despicable! Love all the kids and Joan Cusack is great, as usual.
