What to Watch: February 7 - 13

by Stephanie Earp, posted Feb 7th 2011 2:00AM
Mr. Sunshine - Monday February 7, 8PM ET/PT, CTV/ABC

In all of his outings since 'Friends,' I've increasingly gotten the sense that Matthew Perry is a dark guy. He seems angry a lot, and he even has scowl lines. Sigh. I loved Chandler Bing -- I wanted to be more than 'Friends' with him, if you know what I mean.

But I guess we all have to move on from early TV crushes. Here, Perry plays an angry, scowling manager of an arena where stuff happens: hockey games, circus acts, and reunion tours of mid-level rock bands. In the pilot, Perry gets dumped by his friend-with-benefits, turns 40 and realizes he doesn't want to be alone anymore. Sounds really funny, right? No wait, I can make it worse: Thomas Schlamme is directing but Aaron Sorkin isn't involved, so get ready for a lot of walk-and-talks without very interesting talk.

Also This Week:

The Chicago Code - Monday February 7, 9PM ET/PT, Global/Fox

I have high hopes for the debut of 'The Chicago Code' because of who's involved. Shawn Ryan of 'The Shield' created this world, and had the smarts to cast Jennifer Beals as his leading lady. Beals radiates intelligence and toughness despite her slight frame. I absolutely believe she's capable of destroying almost anything that gets in her way, and as the first female superintendent of fictional Chicago, she's going to need to be ruthless. Ryan has always been interested in exploring the idea of corruption, and with Chicago as his backdrop, he comes back to that theme. Beals' main antagonist is a developer-turned-politician, but no doubt Ryan will give us plenty of reason to call the cops hypocrites.

How I Met Your Mother - Thursday February 10, 9PM ET/PT, Citytv/CBS

The ubiquitous Katy Perry guests stars as the latest blind date for Ted, a girl so naive the gang starts calling her 'Honey.' The set-up comes courtesy of Zoey (other guest star Jennifer Morrison), and leads to one of my favourite repeat jokes on the show as Ted calls an intervention on himself for not realizing he's totally digging Zoey. Don't worry -- Honey still goes out on her date. I'll let you guess who takes her out.

Degrassi - Friday February 11, 9PM ET/PT, MuchMusic

Degrassi is back with new episodes and this hour-long special takes love as its theme. Adam feels connected to Fiona, except when she's boozing it up. And ouch, Adam even suspects he's the one driving her to drink. Someone needs to tell Adam about Al-Anon! Meanwhile Anya's mom is cancer-free, which is good, but that means no more flirting with the hot doctor, which is ... also good. He may not know she's 17, but we do.
