Bill Maher Defends Elisabeth Hasselbeck-to-Egypt Joke (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Feb 9th 2011 6:20PM
On 'Real Time With Bill Maher' last week, Maher had a line about swapping attractive blond CBS foreign correspondent Lara Logan, who had been detained (and released) by Egyptian authorities, for Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck took great offense to this, using the first segment of 'The View' on Monday to attack Maher as a "chauvinistic bigot."

Maher got his chance to respond to her response on 'The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell' (weekdays, 8PM ET on MSNBC.)

"It was a joke," Maher told O'Donnell. "And not even that bad of one."

"There is a line that can be crossed, where you get into mean, bitter, chauvinistic. I didn't even approach it," he continued.

If fact, Maher argued, Hasselbeck should have been flattered by his joke: "Actually, she should be complimented. Because I was kind of putting her on par with Lara Logan, who we all think is a very attractive woman."

We're going to agree with Bill that this was a pretty harmless joke. However, when you gleefully break down how your humor reduces two accomplished women to pretty faces, it does invite the chauvinistic charge.

Just to clarify, regarding the joke that spurred this whole outburst from this woman - Bill Maher was not talking about Lara Logan's sexual assault, the joke was told on Real Time FEB 4th, the assault occurred on FEB 11th. Bill Maher was talking about her release from detention, Lara Logan and her crew were arrested by Mubarek's forces and held until FEB 3rd. The assault happened during a celebration of his fall.
The way EH tried to sell it, on the View, made it appear the joke was in favor of rape, it was not. In other words, she may as well just have been on Fox News with the way she tried to put a spin on the actual timeline of the event. She wanted sympathy from her viewers, so she misconstrued the storyline by adding the (at that time) future assault victim's words.
I know people don't read these comments, but if they do, I hope they take the time to look it up, themselves, so they can see she tried to play her viewers. She should be held accountable for this and apologized. He never advocated for sexual assault. The joke was that she's annoying and isn't a real journalist, and she needed to be sent away, get it. Again, this was before any assault occurred.

It wasn't a joke! Bill Maher was absolutely correct and the US would be a better place without that moron Hasselbeck being given a forum to act like an imbecilic child. If the GOP came up with a new policy that said that Americans should bludgeon their first born child to death for population control, Hasselbeck would be on her soapbox defending it! She ruins the view every day because she has nothing to say on anything that isn't just plain dumb or pathetic. If another country would have her, they would be in high standing with the US for taking her! She has the mind of a 2 year old! Sorry, two year olds.
