Congressman Christopher Lee's Immediate Resignation Surprises Blogger Who Broke Scandal (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Feb 10th 2011 7:00AM
Congressman Christopher Lee, GawkerOn Wednesday afternoon, Gawker released a flirtatious email correspondence between New York Rep. Christopher Lee, a married U.S. congressman, and a woman he linked up with through Craigslist's personals page. Gawker got the emails, which included a photo of a shirtless Lee flexing, from the woman.

By Wednesday evening, Lee had resigned his seat.

Maureen O'Connor, who wrote the story, was on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (Weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN), where she said she was taken aback by how quickly Lee resigned.

"Part of what's so surprising is that this woman said she never met him, she cut off contact when she realized he was in fact a married person," O'Connor told Morgan. "So we don't actually have evidence of him getting together with this woman, or actually cheating on his wife."

But what we do have is a married congressman who was trolling the Internet for dates, using his real name, real pictures and an easy-to-track email address. This kind of reckless behavior suggests that any sort of protracted scandal involving Lee might draw other Internet "friends" out of the woodwork.

Ever notice that it's those fine upstanding gawd fearing Republicans that get caught doing this kind of thing - OK - there was Clinton - but he was the exception.

Both parties have their share of sex scandals (don't forget any Kennedy who has ever served...), this one is hardly the worst we've ever seen. The biggest issue with this is the sheer stupidity of this man, does a congressman (especially one who is in good shape and relatively young like Lee) really need to troll on Craigslist for tail? Couldn't he just pay for a hooker like Eliot Spitzer (a Democrat) did?
