Paley Festival 'Supernatural' Event Gets a Moderator (Who Wants Your Questions)

by Maureen Ryan, posted Feb 10th 2011 9:15AM
Update March 8: Executive producer Ben Edlund will also be part of the 'Supernatural' panel at PaleyFest. He'll be fresh off directing the season's 20th episode, 'The Man Who Would Be King,' which he also wrote.

Update Feb. 17: The Paley Center has announced the panelists for the March 13 'Supernatural' panel. They are Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, Sera Gamble and Eric Kripke. If you want to see who will be on the panels of the other Paley Festival events, look here.

On March 13, 'Supernatural' will make an appearance at PaleyFest, aka the William S. Paley Television Festival.

PaleyFest is a yearly event that brings together together fans, actors and TV creators for panel discussions of notable and buzzworthy comedies and dramas.

'Supernatural' is making its first appearance in five years, and other shows on the Paleyfest 2011 roster include 'The Walking Dead,' 'True Blood,' 'Parks & Recreation,' 'Community,' 'Eastbound & Down,' 'Raising Hope' and a 'Freaks and Geeks'/'Undeclared' reunion.

Moderating the 'Supernatural' Paleyfest panel will be none other than yours truly. I'm very excited, but I'm nervous too, so help me out, Winchester fans. In the comment area, leave your questions for the panelists (more on that below).

Your first question probably is, 'Who's on the panel?' I can't say yet, but I will hazard a guess and say that 'Supernatural' fans are likely to be happy with the lineup.

Tickets are on sale now for the various PaleyFest panels, which take place in Los Angeles March 4–17. For more info on panels and tickets, check out the Paley Center for the Media site.

About those 'Supernatural' questions: I'll only be able to pick a few for the panelists, but thanks in advance for sharing your queries. I'm sure reading a range of fan questions will help me prepare and I hope that during the panel discussion, we'll be able to cover a number of topics that fans want to know about.

Also, regarding the questions, here's the deal: You're very welcome to ask tough questions, but please keep them respectful, or I'll shut down the comment area. As people who read my weekly 'Supernatural' reviews know, I can be hard on the show when I feel its warranted, and a free and spirited debate is encouraged on our 'Supernatural' reviews.

But I post this reminder on every review, so this sentiment will be old hat to many 'Supernatural' fans: "If you express yourself in a screechy, repetitive or unpleasant fashion, or if your starting point is that 'Supernatural' and/or a particular character has been ruined for all time, then please take your thoughts elsewhere." One thing I love about reading the comments on my 'Supernatural' posts each week is that fans are so articulate and thoughtful when it comes to what they like, love and don't like about the show. For that reason, I look forward to perusing your questions!

One little reminder for 'Supernatural' fans: Due to travel commitments, my review of Friday's episode, 'Unforgiven,' most likely won't be posted until Monday morning. Thanks for your patience -- and your help!

I was wondering why Sam had to drink the demon blood to hold Lucifer if he was his true vessel. What happen to the Cain and Able bloodline plot?

Hi, I just wanted to say that I have been watching Supernatural since 2005, which was when I started Veterinary Science and I'm now a DVM/Doctor so god Bless Supernatural, it has seen me through some blood, sweat and tears!!! I always love when the cast talk about their pets, whether it's Misha's turtles or Jensen's dogs. I know it takes training, but will we ever see Icarus, Oscar, Sadie or Harley (of the turtles!) in a small/easy cameo appearance? I'm sure they would steal the scene! To Jensen, Jared and Misha, thank you for being such animal advocates and Jared and Genevieve particularly so. It makes me love you all even more (if that was even possible XD).

--> To Maureen, congratulations, I hope you have a super awesome time, you lucky thing XD

Hello, I'm a big (not sure comparatively though) fan [And relatively new to fandom] of Supernatural.
I and my brother watch this show regularly. We must say that we're fan to this show since it's debut (in my country-India).
Being an honest fan... We admit that we watch new episode from torrent as season 6 is not yet available and we are in college.

Okay all that introduction. We wanted to ask (we would be lucky if obliged) few question:
For,
Eric/Sera/Ben- First of all thanks for giving us such wonderful show and awesome story. Congratulations on successful season 6. We really are looking forward for s07,08 and onwards till excellent conclusion!
The most important aspect of the story is being a family. True that Winchesters made mistakes and screwed their lives but they prevailed anyhow. However we felt like Adam's situation was bit ignored. We know that Dean-girl and Sam-girl fanbase negate his presence and don't want him around. But isn't it a bit inhuman that the brothers don't even discuss about their lost brother? Does being half-blood related makes Adam not acceptable as family? We as being brothers feel that it was non consistent to the nature of the living brother (And Adam is not even Dead-As told in "Appointment in Samarra".) Is there a real resolution for Adam or it would be just 'use and throw' type?

For Actors: First of all a BIG applause for your performance and portrayal of such realistic character. We almost go by that Jensen and Jared are real life brothers. Season six has been all about 'souls' and 'conflict'.
Jared(Sam): How did you felt about having soul must look like? Was it hard being a soul-less human?
Jensen(Dean): What is Dean's view about having a family? Or is it ONLY Sam in his life, not even Adam?
Misha(Castiel): Angels are wreaking Havoc on Paradise. Will we see more action or would it be just the aftermath?
Jim(Bobby): We DON'T want you dead in any circumstances! How does Bobby feel like being a father figure, now that Dean and Sam know about his history (And there were none)? Does he really feel for the boys?

Thanks,
Regards,
Bilkan.

For anybody:

Are you aware that some of your fans are actually Christians and fit Christian theology into the plot via fanfiction?

Yay!! Ben will be in the house!!
OK I have a shaggy dog question -- feel free to edit:

I just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying Season six overall and I really liked the Robo!Sam soul-less storyline.

Alice Jester over at the Winchester Family Business site posted an interview w/ Sera Gamble and Sera made a reference to Ben Edlund's contribution to the souless Sam storyline:
SG: "We discussed Sam’s soullessness at great length before we ever wrote a word of dialogue. Ben Edlund had a lot of ideas about what soullessness could mean, and he was especially ruthless with the metaphysical logic, which was very helpful."

So this question is for Ben: The nature of the relationship between the soul and the body in the Supernatural universe interests me. Especially in light of the previous seasons' emphasis on the body as a vessel for an angel, that it can be a 'meatsuit' for a demon, or polluted by demon blood or defiled by patricide -- where's the soul in all of that? IF souls are so strong, how is it that humans get possessed so easily? (I mean aside from it being a cool plot device and making it so demons can be regular actors w/ contacts)
A demon (possessing a human presumably with a soul) created the antichrist child Jesse - did Jesse have a soul? If Robo!Sam had sired a child during his year of tomcatting around, would the child have a soul? (Hypothetically ONLY - NOT advocating the idea!!!) The shapeshifter babies with human mothers -- do they have souls? What happens to the souls when the bodies of humans are turned to vampires? (Dean didn't lose his right away) Or turned into skin walkers that take the form of animals, who aren't traditionally thought to have souls anyway? What happens to their souls in the Supernatural-universe.

Question for Eric, Sera or Ben
Are the Angels the only supernatural creatures in the SPN universe that weren't originally human?

For Jared:
I think you were absolutely wonderful -- hit it out of the park playing Robo!Sam -- what was the most difficult part of playing a version of Sam like that? How did you approach portraying souless Sam. And I'm glad Sammy is back!

Thanks to you and everybody involved in making Supernatural. Its truly a wonderful show. :D

I have a question about the jokes. They seem to have a theme each year. One year it was D.bag all the time and now they don't say it at all. This year it's Jewish jokes. Even Rufus was Jewish. Anyway, I'd like to know who, how, why do they come up with these jokes. And are there themes because it certainly seems so?

Question for Ben Edlund: Can you tell us a little about the episode you are writing and directing, "The Man Who Would Be King"?

Claudia

Questions for Ben Edlund:
- Will there be puppets in episode 20?
- Will Wayne (6.09) find the backdoor to return to the show?
- How should you fight a fairy if it doesn't fit into the macrowave?
- If Supernatural gets renewed for a seventh season will we get another episode directed by Ben Edlund?
- What happend to alt-Jared and Jensen?
- Will Crowley be back? (Please say 'yes')

For Kripke:
- How does it feel to be dead in an alternate universe?
- So what is 'Octocobra' about? And when will it air on Syfy in this universe?

General questions:
- Is alt-Serge Ladouceur dodging bullets a trickster reference?
- What can you tell us about the 'mother of all', Eve? Any specific reason why the writer choose that biblical name?
- Why did alt-Misha have no taste in clothes and wore that...ugl...unique sweater?
- Any news when the Supernatural anime will be released in US?

I actually have academic questions, so feel free to ignore.

For Eric - Have you read the essay by Roland Barthes, "Death of the Author"? I ask because it seems to me that at the end of "The French Mistake," the show basically performs the death of the author.....Do you think that, at some point, the authority of the narrative escaped the hands of "authorized" writers and now the show is simply one of many Supernatural "stories" in a world full of writers of Supernatural? SPN takes up a lot of real estate on the internet, in terms of fan fiction and fan videos and fan art...in fact, if internet fandom were a Monopoly board, I'd say SPN owned Park Place and Broadway, and perhaps even some of the railroads.

For Ben - Drugs, what kind do you take and where can I get them? On a serious note, though, teddy bears, fairies, fourth walls, and all that jazz. It seems to me that you choose the absurd as your primary vehicle for storytelling and I wonder why? What do these types of stories enable you to do that other, more traditional stories don't allow? And I know you write serious and traditional "drama," but even on a show as out of this world as SPN, your stories can bring the crack....

For Sera - So, as I watching the last episode "And Then There Were None," I realized something that I'm curious to get your opinion on. For the first five seasons, most of the "villains" that Sam/Dean came up against were very much "patriarchal" in nature. Even Meg, Ruby, and Lilith were subservient, to a degree, to a male master. I know many viewers have issues with the show's treatment of women, which I do think is problematic, but what is your take on "the mother" being the big bad this season? Is she really the "Big Bad" or is this another case where we will find out that she, herself, has a master? I ask you this, specifically, because you have taken the reigns as storyteller and as a woman, amongst a majority of men, I'd be curious about your read on the big bad being not only a woman, but a mother - So many Freudian issues to unpack it seems.

For Jared/Jensen - After six years you've established a relationship with fans that can be both sentimental but contentious. So my question is two parts: (1) What was your reaction to the script for The French Mistake? Were you comfortable with being the "object" of the camera's lens, even if it was a distorted (hopefully, presumably) view? and (2) Do you think there is a kernel of truth to the depiction, meaning do you often feel like the characters of Jared and Jensen, especially when confronted with fans, rather than the persons of Jared/Jensen? (By the way, on the monopoly board, I think J2 fan productions would occupy Park Place).

For Misha -> Have you ever seen something supernatural, like a ghost, or something?
