'Roseanne' Cast: Where Are They Now?

by Kelly Woo, posted Feb 14th 2011 5:30PM
Roseanne Oprah Roseanne Barr returned to 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' last week for the first time in 12 years and resolved her "feud" with Oprah (or, more like discovered there was no feud).

Barr believed Winfrey was "pissed" at her for various crimes, including: their difference in opinion during the 2008 presidential campaign; cheating during an arm-wrestling match on Barr's talk show; and Barr's tendency to "piss everybody off sooner or later." Winfrey was clueless about these offenses, and the two buried the non-existent hatchet.

Winfrey also created a virtual 'Roseanne' cast reunion, interviewing John Goodman by satellite from New York and featuring segments from the rest of the Conner family.

'Roseanne,' which ran for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, was a sarcastic but genuine look at a working-class family. The show was an instant hit and an awards magnet, but its popularity never led it to water down its stark portrayal of the Conners' money troubles or avoid taboo subjects such as teen sex, birth control, alcoholism, abortion and domestic violence.

Find out what the cast of 'Roseanne' has been up to lately ...

Roseanne Barr (Roseanne Conner)
After the series ended, Barr hosted her own talk show and was set to appear on a couple of reality shows until she had hysterectomy surgery in 2005. After that, Barr focused mostly on comedy and politics -- headlining a Las Vegas show, hosting a weekly radio show and performing in festivals. In 2009, she was reportedly set to star in a new sitcom, but that project was scrapped.

Recently, Barr appeared in a Snickers commercial and released her third book, 'Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm,' about her experiences running a macadamia nut farm. "I'm a farmer now," she told Winfrey. "I love being in the dirt ... making stuff grow." (Though the farming may fall by the wayside, considering Barr declared she was running for president in 2012 on the "Green Tea Party" ticket.)

During the wide-ranging interview with Winfrey, Barr spoke candidly about her current love life, saying "any goat can have sex, it's not that big of a deal." And don't call her a cougar, by the way, which makes her "want to upchuck." "I say I'm a badger, she joked, "I kind of hide in the dark whenever there's any kind of threat of anything sexual.'

More seriously, Barr discussed the allegations she made in 1991 that she was the victim of incest by her father and admitted she should never have used that term. "I think it's the worst thing I've ever done," she told Winfrey. "It's the biggest mistake I've made."

Next, Barr will appear in a Lifetime reality series about her life running the macadamia farm alongside son Jake and boyfriend Johnny Argent.

Roseanne castJohn Goodman (Dan Conner)
Goodman joined 'Roseanne' as Dan Conner after receiving rave reviews on Broadway in 'Big River.' Since the wrap of the ABC series, Goodman has appeared in feature films such as 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' and 'The Big Lebowski,' while also lending his voice to several hit Pixar films including 'Cars' and 'Monsters, Inc.'

In 2007, Goodman won an Emmy for his role on 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,' and in 2009 he appeared on HBO's 'Treme.' His next project is starring alongside Glenn Close in DirecTV's 'Damages.' "It's gonna be a lot of fun," he told Winfrey. "It's in New York and I've always loved New York."

Laurie Metcalf (Jackie Harris)
An accomplished film, stage and TV actress, Metcalf played Jackie, Roseanne's sister on the hit comedy. Known for her vast drama and comedy range, Metcalf won three Emmys for her work on 'Roseanne.'

After the series ended, Metcalf went on to voice Andy's mom in the 'Toy Story' films and pop up in just about every TV show from 'King of the Hill' to 'Desperate Housewives.' Metcalf starred in the short-lived CW series 'Easy Money' and has a recurring role on the CBS hit 'The Big Bang Theory.' And she's "focusing on a lot of theater," Metcalf said in a segment on 'Oprah.'

Lecy Goranson ( Becky Conner I)
Goranson, the first actress to play Roseanne and Dan's oldest child Becky, left the series to attend college. She appeared off and on during her education, but Sarah Chalke was brought in to fill the void full-time. "I craved normalcy," she said on 'Oprah.

Since 'Roseanne,' Goranson had small parts in 'Law & Order: SVU,' 'Sex & the City' and 'Fringe," as well as independent films like 'Boys Don't Cry.'

Sarah Chalke (Becky Conner II)
Known for years as "Second Becky," Chalke went on to shake that title by appearing in projects such as 'Scrubs' and 'How I Met Your Mother.' She can be seen in CBS's new romantic comedy 'Mad Love.'

"I'm grown up now," she said on 'Oprah.' "I have a fiance and a little guy named Charlie, who's one."

Sara Gilbert (Darlene Conner)
Gilbert joined the cast of 'Roseanne' at the age of 13, growing up before the world's eyes on the series. As Darlene, Gilbert gave a voice to angsty teens everywhere and garnered two Emmy nominations.

Following the end of the series, she co-starred in short-lived shows 'The Class' and 'Twins.' Gilbert appeared on hit dramas including ' 24' and 'ER' and recently launched 'The Talk,' a female-driven talk show on CBS.

"I've got a family and two great kids," she said in her 'Oprah' update, adding, "God, I hope there's not a Darlene Conner in my house."

Michael Fishman (D.J. Conner)
Fishman, the youngest member of the 'Roseanne' cast, joined the series at the tender age of 6 years old. "I had about 200 aunts and uncles who taught me everything I needed to know," he told Winfrey. After 'Roseanne' ended, Fishman finished school and got married at the age of 18. Now a father of two, Fishman has worked on returning to acting, as well as writing and producing.

Roseanne was one of my favorite shows and I still watch the reruns today every chance I can. I wasn't big on the episodes after '94. I think the show started to take a downward spiral after they won the lottery and even a little before then I'd noticed it....oh well, it was still one of the top shows of the 80's & 90's in my opinion regardless!

Hanna-Montana is next to have a failed life like Britney. Once they leave the parents control, the world sucks them up like a vacuum, and destroys everything they were ever taught.
