Whoopi Goldberg Reacts to New York Times Snub on 'The View' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Feb 14th 2011 1:30PM
Whoopi New York Times SnubOn 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated), Whoopi Goldberg reacts to The New York Times' failure to mention her Academy Award win for 'Ghost' in a recent article about this year's white-dominated Oscars. The article, which is entitled 'Hollywood's Whiteout,' mentions several past black Oscar winners, but leaves Goldberg's name out.

"I am embarrassed to tell you it hurt me terribly. When you win an Academy Award, that's part of what you've done, your legacy. I will always be Academy Award-winner Whoopi Goldberg. And just in case there's any damn question," Goldberg said, placing her Oscar on the table in front of her.

"It's hard to not take it personally," she went on. "People in Somalia know. People in China know. Because I -- I know it's hard to believe -- am a worldwide person who's known. I don't know what to say about what you've done ... [There's] nothing I can say except that you're sloppy in your work."

I think Whoopi and all other Black Americans need to stop looking, waiting and expecting the American press and awards ceremonies to validate their capabilities, success, accomplishments and if and when they do be certain that whatever the role or position is really makes a statement or impact on humanity or society as a whole. Much of what I have seen from the Academy Awards has not been complimentary of Black Americans. As much as I appreciate the works of many Black actors(male & female) the roles in which they were awarded have not been truly reflective of the images worthy of applause most notably Halle Balle in Monster's Ball. I was appauld of the role she played and discontinued viewing the movie during that infamous scene with Billy Bob Thorton.

The purpose of the article wasn't to name every black actor who has ever won an Oscar. Whoopi is
using this as yet another opportunity, as she did when Patrick Swayzed died, that she won an Oscar.
Twenty years ago.

I'm sorry, but as a black person in America I have to agree with Whoopi.

@Steve-a-rino I can't believe the crap flying out of your mind right now! Come to my predominantly black south side Chicago neighborhood and repeat the same "we paid them back but all they want is more" bullshit! Just because we have a half-black president I guess it gives your type the gall to think that all black people and other minorities must have equal footing with whites in this country! You cannot CONCEIVE the systemic effects that slavery/jim crow/kkk/etc. still have on today's society! I bet you wouldn't send your children to our schools. I bet you wouldn't want to move here. I bet you wouldn't want to work here. I'd also bet you wouldn't even want to shop here (unless, of course, you were shopping for crack , weed or heroin). We have a LONG LONG way to go before you can seriously claim that your people "paid our people back" (I'd like to know when you think that occurred in history)

So to answer your question, you're right, it isn't enough. Black personalities had to work their ASSES OFF TWICE AS HARD to get to where they are!

Is it even possible to give black personalities enough attention? No matter what you do it's not enough for them.
I wonder if Whoopi ever thought about the fact that SHE could get an Oscar but no white actor is ever going to get the Ebony Award or the BET Award. There's a Black Actor's Guild - is there a White Actor's Guild? Blacks are like Indians in this country - we paid them back, they have their rights, but all they want is more, more, more. Seems to me if we "settled" 'with the Indians they shouldn't have to get free medical, education and all the rest. Treat them like white men - earn what you get and pay what you owe!

I loved Whoopie in Ghost. But my gosh, what an ego. The NY Times article chronicled black actors SINCE 2002. Whoopie's Oscar was PRIOR to 2002. So the Times article writers were not "sloppy" writers, rather Whoopie was a sloppy reader. She owes the writers an apology.

I am not the New York Times, but I think Whoppie Goldberg was excellent in the movie, "Ghost" I have watched it several times. It was a great movie, and Whoppi was great in it. Congradulations again.

The article referened in the 73 years BEFORE Halle Berry and Denzel Washington in 2001, there were only 7 African Americans who won. Whoopi was counted. Reading comprehension is a skill that would prevented this.

- The View isn't syndicated. It is shown across the country on ABC stations.

- The NYT article didn't mention all past acting African American Oscar winners. They made some convuluted statement about there being seven in a certain time frame that didn't include Whoopi's timeframe. The article also failed to mention Louis Gossett Jr. and Cuba Gooding, Jr. as past winners
