Nick Jonas Talks 'Mr. Sunshine,' Favorite Twitter Pals & Wanting to Be on 'Glee'

by Maggie Furlong, posted Feb 15th 2011 12:30PM
Nick Jonas on 'Mr. Sunshine'Matthew Perry is no dummy. After over three decades in this business -- 10 years of that on 'Friends,' one of the most popular shows in TV history -- 'Mr. Sunshine''s leading man is pulling out all the stops to make his new show a success (Wednesdays, 9:30PM ET on ABC).

This week's big draw? Guest star Nick Jonas as Eli Cutler, a teen rock star playing at the Sunshine Center who is moody, demanding and hell-bent on making Perry's Ben Donovan miserable.

I caught up with Jonas, who is genuinely funny in this episode and shows off some serious acting chops, to talk about his inspiration for Eli and his own celebrity demands. He also dished about his favorite TV shows, wanting to be on 'Glee' and the most random people he follows on Twitter.

Maggie Furlong: I loved this episode. You're playing a rock star -- NOT a pop star -- but it's not Nick Jonas. Tell us a bit about Eli White.
Nick Jonas: Eli is kind of an interesting character because he pushes out that he's a jerk, and he feels like he needs to be that way to kind of fit in with the crowd that he wants to fit in with, and be perceived the way he wants to be perceived. I kind of feel like, at the core, he's just full of insecurities and, more than anything, just wants to be accepted by the people he's with in that moment. I think it's similar to what most people go through in their real, normal lives. But yeah, he is a jerk, for sure. [Laughs] It was fun to kind of play someone completely opposite to myself for a day.

So, Eli is nothing like the real Nick Jonas?
He is not like me in any way. But you know what? It's alright. That's what you have to do sometimes.

It's acting! But you wouldn't know anyone in the business who's that much of a jerk, right?
[Laughs] It's very easy to kind of pull inspiration from previous moments in my career up until this point for this character. There are plenty of people who have similar character traits to Eli that I've met along the way. So I just look back at those moments and try to pull what I can from them.

Eli has a lot of demands. What's the one essential thing on your tour rider you can't live without?
Ooh, one thing ... for me, it's pineapple juice. I love pineapple juice. It's not that big a deal, like Eli's [demands] would be. When I was doing a show in London -- I was doing 'Les Mis' -- I met a lot of classically trained singers. They were all sharing with me that pineapple juice is really good for your voice ... it soothes your vocal chords. I started drinking it and I love it. It's my jam now.

When you're not touring or on TV yourself, what are your favorite TV shows?
I don't get a whole lot of time to watch TV, but I'm a big 'No Ordinary Family' fan. It's like, my favorite show. And a show called 'The Cape' on NBC is great. And I'm a big late-night TV fan, so Leno and Conan, and also Jimmy Fallon -- I think he's hilarious.

Any other shows you'd like to guest star on?
I would love to guest star on 'No Ordinary Family.' That would be incredible. I've always been obsessed with superhero TV shows. Before those were my favorites, 'Heroes' was, unfortunately.

If 'No Ordinary Family' called you tomorrow and said you could choose your own superpower, what would you pick?
Ooh. I don't know. I haven't thought that far in advance. [Laughs] But another show ... everybody says this, obviously, in the entertainment business because it's such a popular show ... that's why I'm reluctant to say it from time to time ... but I really do appreciate the use of music in 'Glee.' I think everyone can relate that's in the music business. Everyone's just thankful that music is kind of popular again because 'Glee' does a great job of incorporating it into the show. I would humbly say that if there's ever an opportunity they see that I could work well on that show, I would be honored. Plus I think that cast is really talented -- it would be fun.

Would you let them use any of your music?
Absolutely! Whatever they wanted to use.

I see you follow some of the 'Glee' kids on Twitter, and obviously some industry friends, but is there someone random who's your favorite person to follow on Twitter?
Oh, yeah -- Chad Ochocinco is my favorite. His Twitter is, like, huge and he is constantly tweeting some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. That's what's so great about Twitter -- you can follow somebody, and even if you don't really know who they are or you're not friends with them per se, you can become friends with them through Twitter, which has happened a couple of times to me, which is cool. I follow Nelly ... I met him at this ESPN event the other day and he was amazing. Really nice guy. And so we're Twitter friends now.
