'Supernatural' and 'Fringe' Friday Night Ratings Up

by Catherine Lawson, posted Feb 21st 2011 9:20AM
'Fringe' S03/E14Good news for 'Supernatural' and 'Fringe' fans: The curse of the Friday night "Death Slot" may just be weakening.

Or perhaps Joshua Jackson's personal appeal to fans to boost 'Fringe' ratings is paying dividends. Whatever, it was a good week for both series: According to TVLine.com audience figures bucked recent trends and rose Friday night.

In fact, most scripted shows posted good ratings Friday night. 'Blue Bloods' held its position as the most-watched show, even though its audience numbers were down 10 percent from its recent Wednesday night airing. The big loser was 'Smallville,' which saw a decline in viewers to 2.2 million, a fall of 5 percent.

'Supernatural' had a 15 percent rise -- to 2.26 million -- in total number of viewers, and a 24 percent increase in the much-coveted age 18-49 demographic, hitting a solid 1.0. Over on FOX at the same time, 'Fringe' saw its audience rise 10 percent to 4.06 million, and saw its demographic ratings rise 7 percent, to 1.5.

'Fringe' fans have been fretting about the fate of the offbeat drama since it moved to the much-dreaded Friday night, and despite reassuring messages from producers, viewing figures have been steadily declining. However, it seems like TVSquad was correct in predicting last week that it could finally be heading in a positive direction.

'Supernatural' creator Eric Kripke originally planned the Winchester saga as a five-season drama, but The CW commissioned a sixth season after it garnered consistently high ratings. Under new showrunner Sera Gamble the show's struggled to attract viewers on Friday nights, so this week's turnaround will be welcome news.

'Supernatural' airs Fridays, 9PM ET on The CW.

'Fringe' airs Fridays, 9PM ET on FOX.

Oh boy, do I hate Fringe. I have seen it 3 times, and after hearing about it's cult following I decided to give it a few more chaces. I have'nt changed my mind yet. The plot is not believable and seems unscientific and contrived. Even though I watch on my DISH Network HD employee account I wouldn't waste my HD DVR space on this show. I'm glad that DISH has more HD channels than any other provider because it gives me more choices for something to watch other than Fringe.
