The Best Supporting Actress award has become notorious in Oscars history for unexpected moments, and 'The 83rd Annual Academy Awards' (Sun., 8:30PM on ABC) proved no different. First, they brought out Kirk Douglas to present the award, and he proved that, at 94 years old, he's every bit the charmer he was during his film career."She's gorgeous!" he said upon seeing Oscars co-host Anne Hathaway, "Where were you when I was making pictures?"
He then gave Hugh Jackman grief for laughing, saying that everyone in Australia seems to think he's funny. "Colin Firth is not laughing," he told Jackman. "He's British."
To prolong the agony for the Supporting Actress nominees, Kirkman kept saying, "You know ... " Finally, he put them out of their misery and elevated winner Melissa Leo, for 'The Fighter,' to a state of euphoria.
Though she was seen as a front-runner by many, the win obviously came as a huge surprise to the first-time nominee. "When I watched Kate [Winslet] two years ago it looked so f****** easy," she said, immediately covering her mouth in horror that she'd just dropped the f-bomb on live television.
Luckily, the censors caught it in time, but it is those genuine moments of happiness and shock that make these awards shows so memorable. If nothing else, we know she is truly appreciative of and happy with her win.
