Our Eight Favorite TV Davids

by Jane Murphy, posted Mar 3rd 2011 4:00PM
David DuchovnyThe name David is king on TV, or nearly. Remember 'Starsky & Hutch'? Starsky's first name was David (who knew?). 'Dave' has had its own sitcom ('Dave's World', the '90s show starring Harry Anderson), and it is a go-to name for talk (nighttime's David Letterman and David Susskind, 'This Week''s David Brinkley and 'Today''s founding father, Dave Garroway).

One of the biggest TV stars of the last two decades, David Duchovny, (at right) once scored an Emmy nomination playing "David Duchovny." The 'X Files' and 'Californication' star made a riotous appearance on 'The Larry Sanders Show,' playing a side of "himself" that was strangely attracted to Larry.

Let's take a look at more TV Davids, Daves and, yes, even Davys.

1. David Letterman, 'The Late Show'
Beloved by fans, revered by fellow comics, Dave is in his fourth decade as a talk show host. He is especially masterful when a guest stops by and stops making sense. Joaquin Phoenix, anyone?

2. Dave Chappelle, 'Chappelle's Show'
Where are you, Dave Chappelle? Perhaps the most potent satirist of the George W. Bush administration, what would he have said about President Barack Obama's first term? Below is a clip from Chappelle's appearance on 'Inside the Actor's Studio', remembering his early years.

3. David Brent, 'The Office' (U.K.)
The most maladroit middle manager in history, Wernham Hogg's David Brent insulted more people in a day than Ricky Gervais has in two Golden Globe hosting appearance. Gervais starred as Brent and co-created 'The Office', which was brought stateside in 2005. Steve Carell has been a perennial Emmy nominee in the David Brent-like role of Michael Scott. Below you'll find a Brent meeting-turned-concert, as he shares "Freelove Freeway" with his pained staff.

4. David vs. David, 'American Idol'
David Archuleta and David Cook, both from season 7, were two of the most distinctive voices to ever come out of 'Idol.' Sprinting past tabloid item David Hernandez early in the competition, the gritty Cook and teen dreamboat Archuleta fought to the very end, with Cook prevailing. Cook's follow-up CD went platinum in '09, while Archuleta, despite a hit ('Crush') and 'iCarly' guest shot, just split with Jive records. Below, here are the Davids singing together.

Dave Parks and Recreation5. 'Dave Sanderson', 'Parks and Recreation'
Played by 'Louie''s comic genius Louis C.K., Dave was the uniformed half of 'Parks and Recreation''s second-season star-crossed romance. Leslie (Amy Poehler) was cheered by her dates with Pawnee police officer Dave, even though awkwardness was always in the air (it IS 'Parks and Recreation'). Leslie and C.K. fans alike lamented when Dave departed for San Diego.

6. Davy Jones, 'The Monkees'
With a Broadway background and cute accent, the ladies loved Davy. From 1965 to 1971, the Manchester-born Davy Jones was a huge star and heartthrob (crushing on him big time was Marcia from 'The Brady Bunch' -- played by Maureen McCormick. You can view part of the synergistic meeting between the two ABC stars below). As The Monkees cranked out hits, an up-and-coming English musician, also named David Jones, was sure he'd be confused with the TV star -- so he changed his name to David Bowie.

7. 'SuperDave Osborne'
Part-stuntman, part-Evil Knievel, 100-percent comic actor Bob Einstein. A TV favorite since 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' in the 1960s – and brother of Albert Brooks -- Einstein revived SuperDave for SpikeTV in 2009. He is now best known as 'Curb Your Enthusiasm's Marty Funkhauser, the thorn in the side of Larry David (there's that name again!) Here's SuperDave in a classic appearance with "The One, The Only" Mr. T.

8. Dave Nelson, 'NewsRadio'
Played by Dave Foley from the beloved Kids in the Hall comedy troupe, Dave was the relatively sane center in a broadcasting booth full of oddballs. In this clip, Dave has teamed with anchorman Bill (the late, great Phil Hartman) in kicking some bad habits.

... Did we say 'Kids in the Hall'? What would this list be without the classic ditty 'These Are the Daves I Know,' a music video with Bruce McCullough on lead vocals and only a brief glimpse of the only KITH named Dave, Mr. Foley.

David Murphy, SurvivorHonorable Mention: David Murphy, 'Survivor: Redemption Island'
OK, we couldn't resist including a Murphy (nope, no relation). The SoCal attorney hasn't made much of an impression yet this season -- face it, no one has captured the spotlight as much as bald "former federal agent" Phillip Sheppard. But Murphy is one of those under-the-radar types that could go a very long way.

Surely we missed some Daves. Who's your favorite?

The Monkees was on NBC, not ABC. But nice to see Davy Jones there nonetheless. B^)

Going further back in time, though, the classic Adventures of Davey Crockett and its unforgettable theme song should probably have been in there.
