Blake Shelton Joins 'The Voice' Judging Panel

Blake SheltonNBC is adding a little country flavor to the judging panel on its new singing competition, 'The Voice.'

According to Entertainment Weekly, country singer Blake Shelton will join Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine as the fourth and final judge/coach on the reality series.

"We couldn't have a panel that represented the hottest American music without a strong country presence, and Blake is at the top of his game right now," NBC reality chief Paul Telegdy said. "Not only is he incredibly charismatic, but his passion for collaborating with and bringing the best out of other talented artists makes him the perfect choice to round out this 'Dream Team' of musician coaches."

Shelton has had eight number one country hits, and was named the Country Music Association male vocalist of the year in 2010.

Based on a European show called 'The Voice of Holland,' 'The Voice' is unique in that the judges face away from the singers during auditions, choosing finalists based on talent alone. The show's similar to 'The X Factor' in that the judges will also mentor the contestants they like the best.

Viewers will vote on the winner after live performances. When NBC announced the show in December, reality guru Mark Burnett, who is producing the show, said of the blind audition format, "Somebody will show up with all the right moves and look like a star, but their voice is only good, not great, and they don't get chosen. You're dealing only with your sense of hearing -- do you believe this voice is worthy of your commitment? The coaches have skin in the game and will be a part of the careers of these young performers after the show."
