Kathy Griffin Gets Sued for Making Fun of an Audience Member on 'The Defenders' (VIDEO)

Kathy Griffin, 'The Defenders'Even on scripted television Kathy Griffin doesn't seem to know when it might be best to just keep quiet. That was the whole basis of her comedian character's story on 'The Defenders' (Fri., 8PM ET on CBS). It got her into trouble with a sensitive member of the audience that she targeted for ridicule, and it was poised to get her into more trouble in the courtroom.

She didn't seem to be taking the whole affair seriously, which is a little understandable. How many times has Don Rickles been sued for being mean? Should he be? It's the same basic premise.

She seemed to take special delight in the witness relating back the jokes she's said about him. She did manage to keep quiet when Lisa was giving her defense, including things like "She's not a dangerous person. She's just a second-rate comic working a third-rate room."

Instead, Griffin gave great facial expressions, and saved a few barbs for Lisa when she returned to the table. "Are you still a showgirl? Are you wearing a bedazzled thong?" she asked, referencing Lisa's career through law school.

While it was the "B-story" of the episode, Griffin turned out to be a lot of fun in a role that was clearly written for her. Maybe she can get herself into more trouble in a future episode. Maybe enough to be the "A-story" next time?
