Talking TV Podcast Takes Your Questions on Pilots, Sitcom Cliches, Mythologies and More

by Maureen Ryan, posted Mar 9th 2011 1:30PM
I answered quite a few reader questions in Tuesday's Ask Mo column, but as always, there were a ton of good queries left over, so Ryan McGee and I decided to take on a few of them in this week's Talking TV With Ryan and Ryan podcast.

We kicked things off by listing a few of the pilots we're most interested right now. Mid-winter to early spring is the height of "pilot season" in the TV industry: Dozens of pilots are being made right now, and though only a few will make it to air next season, we discussed some of the projects that most intrigue us at this preliminary stage.

Time codes for the various discussions and questions are below. And, I'm sorry to say, we didn't talk about 'Doctor Who' this time around. I just like using that podcast logo once in a while.

Podcast discussions:

023:00: Some of the more intriguing pilots being developed or made right now.

23:0125:59: The apparent demise of 'The Cape' (the finale of which will only be available online) doesn't mean that superpowered dramas are dead -- far from it.

26:0031:09: Sitcom clichés we can't stand.

31:1037:55: What location shooting does for a show.

37:5644:56: Do we dislike or even hate Frank Gallagher from 'Shameless'? That evolves into a discussion of supporting characters on certain shows who may take up too much space, so to speak, or in some way distract from the proceedings.

44:57end: Should you get invested in a show with a mythology given that most of them have to contend with the threat of being canceled? Should you jump in or wait to see if a show sticks around?

As always, you can subscribe to the Talking TV podcast on iTunes, or you can listen to or grab the mp3 file from this site.

This week's podcast is also available here, as are full archives of every 'Talking TV' podcast. The 'Talking TV' archives are also available on iTunes as well.

Thanks for listening!

i like the time stamps but on the episode podcast smorgasboard, the file was broken up into chapters which was really helpful. i like most of your episode but not being a Spartacus fan i tend to skip that stuff.

there have been fewer minority friends on tv, i can think of Raj on BBT as a big one, or Aziz Ansari on Parks and Rec, maybe it's no longer minority it's just now Indian Guy

A Viva Laughlin mention, I never thought I would hear of that again. It is based on one of my favorite mini series, Blackpool. I'm a big David Tennant fan. Did you ever review Blackpool? If so, where can I find it. I was wondering what you thought if it.
