'V' Season 2, Episode 10 Recap (Season Finale)
['V' - 'Mother's Day']Keeping in mind that this could very well be the series finale as well as the season finale (no final word has yet been given from ABC), there were certainly enough twists to keep things interesting as well as a bit of a slaughter of some major characters.
It would be a shame to end the series on such a down note. Usually people prefer happy endings. From the looks of things, humanity will be licking some serious Visitor boot in the coming season.
On the plus side, we saw a lot of Visitor tail this episode. They seriously saved up the CGI budget for this one.
Things don't look good for the Fifth Column. If there is another season, it looks like the concept will be abandoned in favor of the Ares Project. Fifth Column was the Visitor resistance and that has been crushed. Now there is the human resistance (which would probably have been crushed at the end of next season).
Speaking of Erica, she hasn't yet learned that "Lisa 2" has killed her son -- and will be giving her a grandchild. Imagine that. Anna and Erica as one's grandmothers. ... This would crush her worse than the death of her ex-husband.
There was a lot of nepotistic death as well, with Amy killing Ryan and Anna impaling Diana. It certainly would drive down expenses for the hypothetical next season by cutting the cast. Best line of the entire series: "Now THAT'S how you kill your mother."
There's a chance that more people would have survived had the series already been greenlit for a Season 3. It's possible that the creators just wanted to create some shocks in the finale to make it more memorable in case it didn't return. Other science fiction/fantasy examples of this include the series finales of 'Angel' and 'Blake's 7.'
For the hypothetical third season, Laura Vandervoort could very well have a double role as her own evil twin sister. Hobbes was nowhere to be found, and it's likely he betrayed the group as he did in a previous episode. Even Chad's character seems to be getting the axe.
It's a shame Jane Badler won't be around for another season. It would have been nice to see her character meet the Lars Tremont character played by Marc Singer. But who knows? It's a science fiction show and she's been dead before.
The season (series?) ends with Father Landry and most of the rest of humanity under the influence of "bliss," and the Visitor armada nearing the planet. Without the landing sites, I don't know how they will actually land, but I'm sure the creators will put something out of the air (like the "other Queen egg").
In fact, should the series continue it seems like it would take an entirely different direction with almost an entirely new cast. The only actresses who actually need to return are the ones playing Erica and Anna. Ryan, Diana and Tyler are dead. Father Landry is under Amy's spell. Chad has been arrested. Hobbes has disappeared. Even Amy is growing to the point where she could be played by someone else next season.
It's notable that this episode began in the same way as the season premiere, with Erica having a Visitor-related nightmare. Anna and Erica are both very much alike, both fighting for the survival of their species.
Should the series continue, here are my ideas for what should, or could, happen:
-- Lisa will break out and avenge Tyler's death with her twin, eventually joining Project Ares or whatever human resistance was around. But not before the new hybrid is born.
-- Amy will eventually turn on Anna, perhaps trying to be the new queen (by next season, she'd certainly be old enough). It may also come from jealousy towards the new hybrid.
-- Project Ares will fall to the Visitors.
What are your thoughts for the potential storylines? And what did you think of the episode, the season and the series?
