Will Jake Die on 'General Hospital'? His TV Dad, Lucky, Weighs In ...

by Michael Maloney, posted Mar 19th 2011 5:00PM
Jonathan Jackson, 'General Hospital' 'General Hospital' fans who found the show's fatal bus crash a little anti-climatic earlier this year (none of the regulars died in it) are about to learn that they should be careful what they wish for.

Lucky and Elizabath's son, Jake (the biological child of Jason and Elizabeth), is hovering between life and death after being hit by a car, and the prognosis isn't good.

If Jake perishes, the ramifications promise to domino throughout the lives of several characters. Losing their biological child may nail the lid shut on any kind of reunion between Jason and Liz. Jake's final gift could be to provide a kidney or two to baby Josslyn, Jax and Carly's daughter, who's also been admitted to General Hospital.

This crisis could also lead to a reconciliaton between Lucky and Elizabeth -- especially if it comes out that Liz's son, Aiden (whom many believe to be fathered by Lucky's half-brother Nikolas), is actually Lucky's son.

This painful ordeal harkens back to a similar 'GH' storyline in the '90s when little B.J. was declared brain dead after a bus accident and her heart was transplanted into her cousin Maxie.

Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) weighs in on the impending tragedy and what it means for everyone involved ...

How does Lucky feel about Jake even though he's Jason's biological son?
He looks at both Jake and Cameron [Liz's son with the late Zander] as his own. He's reconciled with that.

Ironically, Lucky couldn't accept Aiden as his son and he truly is -- only Lucky doesn't know that yet.
Lucky and Elizabeth's relationship exploded around that time. No, he doesn't have that kind of relationship with Aiden. Lucky always wished that he would have been able to have a child with Elizabeth. But he doesn't let [Aiden being Nikolas'] affect his relationship with Jake and Cameron.

As a real-life parent is it difficult to play these scenes in which Jake is near death?
Anything that's heavy is difficult to approach. I think all of us in the cast, who are tied into this part of the story, moved towards it with a sense of hesitancy just because we know how intense and heavy something like this is. It's a tricky thing to describe. It's a different process, at least for me, as an actor, how to approach something like this. I don't feel really comfortable using my [real] children to approach a performance. I wouldn't judge anyone else for doing that. It's more embracing the situation as opposed to actively using my children as emotional motivation. I honestly don't know how other people approach it. Ultimately, it's a performance and you don't want to blur that [with your own life] too much.

If the stakes aren't raised enough in a storyline then the audience's involvement is only going to be so much. Conversely, if a show goes too far by killing a fan favorite (like Maureen Bauer) or a child, then it runs the risk of alienating viewers and losing them.
It's a tough job [head-writing a soap opera]. There are unknowns and variables that go into it especially when you have daily storytelling the whole year round. It's a very unique situation as opposed to writing film or even 26 episodes of a prime time show. It's a different creative approach and definitely tough. I hope that viewers will be able to find enough redemption within the tragedy to be engaged with the story and not just be bowled over by the tragedy.

Watch Friday's episode of 'GH,'
including Jake's accident, here:

Viewers are so grateful the show chose to keep Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) on contract that they'll likely keep watching as a thank you.
I was very thankful [the show decided to keep her]. It was difficult when it first happened, but when it was reversed it was wonderful. I'm definitely pleased and excited about that.

Before Jake's accident, Elizabeth was questioning Aiden's DNA, hoping that if he turns out to be Lucky's then there could be a reconciliation. Meanwhile, Lucky's headed towards a green card marriage with Siobhan. It's like the clock is ticking -- will Lucky learn Aiden is his before he commits to another woman?
The storylines have been great. The history that's there with Lucky and Elizabeth, the Aiden equation and Lucky's relationship with Siobhan has created some really good drama. It's a good observation that there's the sense of a ticking clock as to what's going to come out of it. It's a great set of conflicts to be able to play.

There's a consensus among a majority of fans that some couples, at the end of the day, just need to be together -- Luke and Laura; Sonny and Brenda. Do you feel Lucky and Elizabeth fall into that category as well?
Yeah. It would be a little hard to deny the connection that fans have had with the Lucky and Elizabeth storyline since its inception. It was a very unique love story at the time with Elizabeth healing from the rape and Lucky being there for her. There was purity and romance and it was just something that really connected with people in a huge, huge way. That connection is still there. In terms of the future, I have no idea what's [going to happen.] I don't know where it's going to go. I take it day to day or week to week.
