James Malinchak Gives to a Basketball Charity on 'Secret Millionaire' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 21st 2011 3:12AM
James Malinchak, 'Secret Millionaire''Secret Millionaire' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) has shown us big hearts with big wallets each week, and this time we got it in the form of motivational speaker James Malinchak. He spent his week in Gary, Indiana with only $50 in his pocket and a desire to reach out to his fellow man.

While there he met Tony Branch, an out-of-work steelworker who spent his free time volunteering at a girls' basketball program. Basketball was a big part of Malinchak's own background, so the work being done with these girls touched him particularly.

When he got a chance to come back, he stunned them with a gift of $50,000 and remains in contact with both the organization and Branch, whom he befriended during his time in Gary.

Maybe 'Secret Millionaire' should be a mandatory program for all people of that kind of wealth. Certainly it's more enlightening and motivational than 'My Super Sweet 16.'

Ok, so everyone is bashing that these millionaires aren't giving enough or to the "right" organizations. I am pretty sure that since it is coming from their own pockets they have the right to decide how much and to whom it goes. Whether you agree with who is receiving the "proper" amount is irrelevant. The point is that someone is taking their time, stepping out of their comfort zone to see how people who haven't got what they do live, and personally spending time with organizations that are doing good things within their community. You don't have to agree with the way the show is "handled," but how about applauding the people who are out doing things for others, just for the sake of doing them? I can personally say I haven't taken the time to help others in that way, have you?

The show secret millionnaires is a show to point out awareness to the growing problem in the US. The problem is calld entitlement. That "you owe" me attitude. If you do not give I get it one way or the other. Look at Wisconsin, how people trash the public buildings and for what.....? The Unions? People wake up you are destroying your own State. Remember the story of the 7 fat years and the 7 meager years? Face it, in the fat years America went to sleep with a nice full belly. Now they are waking up because the rats have eating away at the stash. It is time to stay awake now and keep the rats away less you end up with zero. You better figure out fast who those rats are.
And start acting with more decency. The riots that you see on TV are sickning. How people can behave like that is beyound my understanding. And why they always have to leave destruction and heaps of trash behind is disguisting. That entitlement attitude has to go. Work for it and be proud of your days work. Unions were good in the early days, but since they are bully run they have no use in this Society anymore. Look what they do with the members dues. Instead of putting it in their pension plans they use it for other purposes. Like putting politicians in place for their benefit. Look at the Unions Bosses houses and the vacations they take and draw your own conclusion. Just think when they call a strike. Does the Union pay your bills? Your lucky if you get some for waving that strike sign. When is America going to see it for what it is. FAT years are over boys.

I've stopped watching "Millionaire." The original series millionaire's were giving away hundreds of thousands to various 'show' charities. However this season should be called "Miser Millionaire." $40K-$50K will barely get these people around the block. These millionaires should be called "Thousand Dollar Millionaires."

Hi Gram, Ty&Dill

At a time when greed seems to have overtaken those that have, I think this show is refreshing. At least the money is being given to the people who have very little but still find it in thier hearts to do for those that have even less. I would rather see people like this get the money than the folks who sit on welfare or some other gov't program and expect everything to be handed to them. I think these folks should be made to volunteer somewhere and earn thier handouts. Of course, they'de have to get up before the crack of noon in order to do this. Maybe they could even learn some job skills along the way...

This show is appalling you get these millionaires to spend one week in what average people spend lifetimes in and they give the like 10000 dollars as if that solves the problem. The rich are grossly given to much credit for there wealth the Walton Family is worth billions of dollars and they keep there employees on temporary status so they don't have to give the benefits or a decent wages. Here is some facts from 1980 to 2005 the richest 1% earned 80% of the wealth earned by this nation. That is like 100 people get a 100 slice pizza and the first guy taking 80 slices. We keep giving rich people more in hopes we might get something in return but instead they send our jobs overseas where they can treat people inhumanely. You can't open a pinata by giving it tax breaks you open it by beating it with a stick.

I don't know what Wal-Mart and their employees have to do with this article. If you have ever volunteered to coach a sports team that has kids involved who are lucky to have a good meal and warm bed, then maybe you would understand how much this money means. It isn't about the guy giving it, it is about the good it will do keeping these children involved in a sport and not on the streets.

alr126, obviously you have no idea of what playing sports can do for a young child or adolescent!!! Being an athlete helps our young people to focus and to stay out of trouble!!! Get with it!

A BASKETBALL CHARITY?!!! WT heck, how about giving to something substantial. You have money, but, obviously no brains. How about helping underpriveledged kids get medical care!

I agree airhead, everyone should have good medical care. However, a bastketball team teaches many things that kids can use all their lives. Think about the larger picture, they may already have medical care. Gee, since you have more brains, you must have more money , go on the show so you can pick the charity you want to support the most.

hi bev

I have watched this show a few times. I wish they would have more programs on like this instead of trash like the Kardashians, Gosslins and those people who have tons of kids they expect everyone else to pay for.

I like the show but would only give it a 6-7 if there was a grading system. the premise of the show is a feel good show and it does make one feel good. But seeing this is the age of reality TV shows and everyone seems to want their 15 minutes and have the "how much do I get" attitude. Where girls behaving badly, teen moms, 20 and 30 somethings acting like imature spoiled brats are paid 10s of thousands of dollars if not more for their show among tons of other reality shows.

My one question is, how much these millionaires were being paid form their 15 minutes as i honerstly don't believe they are doing this for free.
