'The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business' Season 18, Episode 5 Recap
['The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business' - 'Don't Ruin the Basketball Game (Kunming, China)']"Wait ... what do dinosaurs have to do with ruining basketball games?" you ask.
Well, if you were running 'The Amazing Race' with a couple of Harlem Globetrotters, it might be to your advantage to have a dinosaur take your place in a quick pick-up game. Right? That's what it was all about tonight -- dinosaurs on the basketball court. Or, I could be leading you all astray. Read on!
Thankfully, the show's producers didn't decide to continue the "to be continued" leg tonight and we actually had a finished leg. For me, it was quite a satisfying finish, but perhaps not for everyone. At least one team might be a bit unhappy about it.
When we last left the teams, Kent and Vyxsin were in a kerfuffle about their missing fanny pack. Since it contained their passports as well as their money, they had no choice. Even though they were already the last team, they had to go back to retrieve the bag.
It seems that this turn of events might have been enough for them to kick their race into gear. With Vyxsin's extreme meltdowns last week, I was ready for them to go. After watching them in action this week, not so much. I was actually happier to see another team bite the Philimination.
They received a 30-minute penalty at the Pit Stop, but they were the only ones who knew about it heading into the second part of the leg. Since it wasn't a non-elimination leg, they didn't have to face any extra tasks. But that's still quite a chunk of time to make up when you're already behind the pack. That is, unless there's a bunch-up point. And yes, there was!
Making a wise decision not to share the penalty news, Kent and Vyxsin joined all the other teams on a train ride. Interesting trains they have there -- three bunks high. Once again Zev and Justin cracked me up with their comments about how the murderers on the train won't go for the high bunks! Those two and the Globetrotters are the comedy relief for the season.
Ron and Christina are somewhat comedic, but definitely in a different vein. They're more of a "shake your head and sigh aloud" comedy. What the heck is going on with Ron? He was gruff in his previous season; now he's a bewildered fussbudget who likes food way too much.
There were lessons to be learned in this leg. First and foremost, teams shouldn't depend on following other teams. Kisha/Jen and Zev/Justin decided to team up with and follow Ron and Christina. After all, they speak Chinese and surely they were the team in charge! Er, no. They went to an entirely wrong place, thus allowing other teams to snag the lead.
Other lessons learned this leg:
- Give your dolls nicknames and you'll zap through the memory task. Just ask the Globetrotters!
- Two cowboys can't beat two Globetrotters at basketball.
- Sometimes you have to U-turn people right to their face. That was Kent's doing and probably one of the best decisions he could have made.
- Sometimes karma can come back to bite you, Cara and Jaime. True, they might not have realized that Flight Time and Big Easy were already running last, but still.
- Not all golden arches are McDonalds.
- If you have the Express Pass and need it, use it. But try not to screw up and let another team beat you to the Pit Stop.
- Redheads are mean. What? As a redhead, I must stress only some redheads are mean.
- Their names are Cara and Jaime.
With the exception of the dolls and the theater in the Detour, it was a bit disappointing that the other tasks weren't all that culturally related. Putting solar tubes up on a building? Erecting a dinosaur? While the latter was cool, it didn't provide the usual glimpse into the people and the culture.
However, the end made everything all worthwhile. Jet and Cord scored first place while Cara and Jaime were Philiminated. They were rude and played the role of the Ugly Americans (although they are both indeed pretty women) in their previous season. There wasn't much character development this time around.
What do you think? Did you want them gone, too? Or is there another team you want gone more? Tell us in comments!
