CNN's Nic Robertson Blasts Fox News Claim That Gaddafi Used Him as Human Shield (VIDEO)
Fox News reported Monday that Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi had used journalists from CNN and Reuters as human shields by inviting them to inspect damage to his compound. According to the report, British forces were forced to call off additional fighter jet attacks because the journalists were there. On 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (Weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN) CNN's Nic Robertson, who was in Gaddafi's compound when this allegedly happened, lashed out at Fox News's reporting on the issue, calling it "Unimaginable, hypocritical, irresponsible, outrageous."
Robertson then disputed Fox News's position that they hadn't sent any of their employees to the compound because they suspected they would be used as human shields. According to Robertson, there was in fact somebody working for Fox News in the compound with him.
While Robertson didn't dismiss the possibility that the British forces stopped bombing because of the journalists' presence, he argued they weren't being intentionally used as human shields, as Fox reported.
Then Robertson offered up a parting shot to Fox News:
"When you come to a country like this you expect lies and deceit from the leadership, I don't expect it from other journalists. I think what they proposed is preposterous, outrageous, and frankly I'm deeply disappointed to hear it from other journalists."
Update: Fox News' Jennifer Griffin, who broke the initial story, has responded to Robertson's charge. She retracted her assertion that there were no Fox News personal at the compound, but stood by her reporting that Gaddafi is using Western journalists as human shields.
