'Skins' Season 1, Episode 10 (Season Finale) Recap

Eura in MTV Skins['Skins' - 'Eura']

This is it. The end of the first season of 'Skins,' one of the most controversial prime-time shows in recent history.

It has been an inconsistent opening season, to put it mildly, but despite the odds against it, this season finale was surprisingly good -- even though there's still plenty to dislike about it. This episode's protagonist, Eura, has not been nearly as compelling as her Bristol counterpart, Effy, but finally the MTV series seems to be going its own way, as opposed to aping the British original.

Eura, like Effy, is Tony's unusually mute sister. But whereas Effy was a silent ice-princess completely in control of when and to whom she spoke, Eura is more of a fragile, damaged little sister who desperately wants to help her (completely undeserving) older brother Tony. She cleverly realizes that extreme measures are necessary and fakes her own abduction. Her strange disappearance is responsible for the predictable reunion of Tony's clique.

Many of the story-lines wrapped up -- just in case MTV doesn't renew the series: Tony and Stanley made up; Cadie put it all on the line for Stanley, but he still picked his childhood-infatuation Michelle; Abbud and Daisy recognized that their friends-with-benefits situation has grown into love; Chris moved into Tina's abandoned apartment and Tea apologized to Tony for making him fall in love with her and realized she really does love her girl-crush Betty.

Of them all, the Daisy-Abbud sitch was hands-down the least interesting of the plot developments. They haven't in any way conveyed a spark or chemistry, and it's unsurprising that a young couple in their first sexual relationship would not be able to have emotion-less sex, so Abbud's revelation that he loves Daisy is predictable and, well, meh. It's doubtful even the most naive viewers applauded in delight at that turn of events.

As for the Michelle-Stanley-Cadie love triangle, it was obvious when the "Shout" duet on stage turned into Stan serenading Michelle in the audience (not to mention earlier, when Stan is obsessively watching a childhood Halloween video of him, Tony and Michelle) that Cadie (at least this season), can't compete with Michelle for Stan's undying affections. Although Michelle was never a personal favorite, and the original Syd-Cassie relationship was, it makes sense (for now) that Stan and Michelle get together -- especially since Tony is hung up on Tea.

Speaking of Tony, he basically went from cocksure and womanizing to a depressed, bed-ridden sad-sack? That's a bit ridiculous, but hey, maybe next season he'll be a new-and-improved Tony who isn't obsessed with a lesbian or dedicated to screwing over his friends whenever it benefits him. He's been the series' biggest disappointment, because he's supposed to be the sun the other kids orbit, but James Newman hasn't been up to the task. I'll spare the repetitive Nicholas Hoult comparison, except to say that Tony Snyder (I had to look up the last name) is no Tony Stonem.

Tea, who has been the most interesting character this season, makes a self-discovery that will also surprise no one. She stalks Betty around Baltimore (one can only assume this is still the city where the show is based) and even visits her in the hospital (since apparently Betty's parents don't deem it necessary to attend their teenager's surgery). The scene of her stripping down to her bra and panties to get into bed with a convalescing Betty is, while unbelievable, a tender reminder of who Tea really is; she will never be with Tony.

The final scene of Chris interrupting Michelle and Stan kissing was a humorous end to a sometimes trying season. Will the partying continue another year? Will the kids continue to play musical beds? Only MTV's executives know, but despite its flaws, it would be worth it to see if the writers can learn from their mistakes and create a more consistently compelling season.

'Skins' airs Mondays at 10PM ET on MTV.

compared to regular american teen tv whihc is either reality garbage like Real world or jersey shore, this was not bad. However, the masterpiece of the first generation in the UK puts it to shame - then again, it puts everything on our TV set to shame. I watched sex in the city last night on vidoe, and realized how pathetically bourgousie our TV is - its about possessions, marriage, real estate and shoes??? There was something more in That series that compels us.

I love this show and hope it comes back for round 2! Massively entertaining and "real."

Your reviews are invalid because you keep comparing MTV Skins and it's cast of characters to the original UK Skins. Although some of their names are the same and some of their personality traits have been similiar they are different kids all together. Maybe if you were paying attention to that you could have enjoyed US Skins for what it did bring to MTV..an awesome bunch of American Kids telling their own stories..not retelling someone elses..hoping for another season!
