Steve Martin on 'The Colbert Report'Steve Martin was on 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30PM ET Comedy Central), were he performed a song from his new bluegrass album, 'Rare Bird Alert.'

But before doing so, he told Colbert about different types of banjo playing techniques, including one known as "clawhammer."

"Clawhammer?" Colbert repeated. "It sounds like a disability ... "

"Or I think of it as a 'Kama Sutra' position," Martin shot back.

Well, you can certainly learn a lot about a man from what he thinks "clawhammer" sounds like.

Do people really think that clawhammer banjo is something too obscure or esoteric to know about? The dumbing-down of America is a truly depressing trend.

Hardly a trend... what's done is done. Listen to "popular" music today. Many of these so-called "musicians" don't play instruments, nor can they perform outside of a stuio (see the superbowl half-time show). Those of us who are familiar with the banjo are just "old and in the way".

Sadly, franplatt, clawhammer banjo IS something that needs an explanation to the majority of the population. Ask anyone under thirty to tell you what it is: you MIGHT get 2 out of ten correct answers.
