TNT Renews 'Southland' for Season 4

by Maggie Furlong, posted Mar 22nd 2011 3:00PM
'Southland' fans, put down those petitions -- TNT has renewed the critically acclaimed cop drama for a fourth season.

'Southland' cast

The gritty, realistic series, which takes an intimate look at life for the officers and detectives of the LAPD, has been given 10 more episodes for Season 4. After a bumpy start on NBC and subsequent move to TNT, the series averaged 2.9 million viewers this season, up 6% compared to the Season 2.

In a statement, executive vice president and head of programming for TNT Michael Wright said: "'Southland' has been acknowledged by many critics as one of the sharpest, most entertaining and most authentic dramas on television today. John Wells, Chris Chulack and their teams created a brilliant roller coaster ride this season, with countless riveting scenes and unforgettable character arcs. We are extremely proud to have 'Southland' on TNT and to bring it back for a fourth season."

Fans know that Season 3 marked huge changes for the series' main cast. Regina King's Detective Lydia Adams had to adjust to life with a new partner, a new potential love interest and some drama with her former partner, Russ (Tom Everett Scott).

Officer John Cooper, played by Michael Cudlitz, continued to struggle with his addiction to painkillers, which started to seriously interfere with the job. It also turned the tables with his rookie "boot" partner Officer Ben Sherman, played by Ben McKenzie, who has now moved on to bigger things on the force.

And then there was the season's most shocking storyline, with Detective Sammy Bryant, played by Shawn Hatosy, losing his partner Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro) in the line of duty.

No production schedule or premiere dates have been announced yet, but expect to see more 'Southland' in early 2012.

Are you excited for more 'Southland'? Whose storyline are you looking forward to seeing more of? Sound off in the comments ...

Southland is the Best show on tv. I watch the reruns before any other shows. This is why NBC is going down the tubes. They keep shows that stink and let the great ones get away. Thank you TNT for keeping Southland on.

I was worried Southland wouldn't be on anymore. I'm so relieved it will be on in 2012! This is the kind of show that takes time to develop a "relationship" with the characters and now that I know them, I don't want to lose them!

Southland is incrediable...I simply love the show...Wouldn't mind seeing Regina King in a nice pair of something little, (remember the garage scene in Enemy of the State). Oh and the Pistol Grip Shotgun home defense was the best.

I am so glad to hear Southland didnt get the axe like Hawthorne. I look forward to another season. I cant wait. I didnt pick up on it untill TNT picked it up and then it caught my eye. Real like drama thats what im talking about. Not just on the job, but their personal lives also. I cant wait. Im waiting to see what happens with Officer Cooper and his personal demons. Im also waiting to see what pans out for Lydia in her love life. I hope she comes back a little more sexier than you guys have her looking right now.

One of the very best drama's on TV. I know that after a while the plots grow tougher to think up but the production and direction of this show, along with the outstanding acting, has made it one of the very best. Moving to TNT was a stroke of luck that was perfect. It allows the show to be more realistic and truthful. Most of the really good drama on TV today is on "cable". The national channels waste our time with their cheap "reality crap" so pooh-pooh to them!! No wonder they're losing market share! I share in Moni's Chicago Code loss. They're problem was the national channel.
