'Outsourced' Star Ben Rappaport Books New Pilot

by Chris Harnick, posted Mar 24th 2011 1:30PM
Ben RappaportHey, 'Outsourced' fans, you're not going to like this bit of news: Series star Ben Rappaport has booked a new gig.

According to Deadline, Rappaport has been cast opposite Michelle Trachtenberg in an untitled workplace sitcom set at a venture capital firm. This indicates 'Outsourced' is even more on the cancellation bubble than we suspected.

Several TV Squadders have expressed disappointment with the fledgling series. Last spring, our own Joel Keller thought the pilot showed potential ... if only it stopped going for the cheap cultural jokes.

Maureen Ryan called the the series "vaguely insulting and condescending." She's right.

Maggie Furlong outsourced the pilot review to our team in India, and even they were split on it.

Despite strong premiere ratings with an audience close to 7.5 million, the series has steadily shed viewers week after week. The March 17 episode was seen by a mere 3.59 million viewers.

Besides sagging ratings, here's another reason why 'Outsourced' should be canceled: NBC held 'Parks & Recreation' for 'Outsourced.' Yes, we're still not over that.

It sucks they cancelled this show. It was one of the few unique shows out there. Not absolutely hysterical, but definitely solid and has a lot of potential. The "outrage" on the internet about this show upsets me so much. "How dare they create a show that promotes outsourcing?" - Yeah - how dare "they" create a show that is culturally relevant to what is going on in the world. The show didn't create outsourcing - it's just entertainment based on the world we live in. DELL outsourced it's call center to India a decade ago.

Then there are the people who get upset because they find it "racially offensive." Again, this goes back to how people can't handle the truth about the world around them. White liberals get all upset when a show has edgy humor about another race. The show takes stabs at Indians lack of knowledge of US culture, and it's hilarious because it's fairly accurate. It goes both ways...I don't know sh*t about Indian culture, and they make fun of this via Todd's character. This doesn't make anyone bad people...it's just the nature of living on opposite sides of the globe. As someone who has dealt with outsourced programmers, I found the show hilarious because it was pretty accurate (with exaggerated examples of course...it's a TV show after all). The show is about the differences that come up and how the two sides come together to understand each other. When 2 cultures collide, they are bound to offend each other now and again...that's what makes it real.

i think parks and recs is funnier, although i do enjoy both shows. the characters on outsourced, although amusing, seem a bit forced.

Outsourced is based on a movie by the same title. Just got it off itunes.. really cute and funny. Definitely check it out! Its too bad it couldn't have been more like that. I like that it was an American show set in India. That has to break some sort of record or set some sorta first, right? What I mean, is that it had something really unique going for it. Too bad NBC squelched it.

As a second generation Indian American, I find this show to be absolutely hilarious. I see nothing distasteful or offensive about it in any way. The cultural references are true, although humorously and slightly exaggerated to some extent in certain circumstances. It still manages to provide a lot of insight into Indian culture. Who finds this show to be offensive?? I'm confused, especially when considering the fact that every Indian person I know loves this show...

Clearly, Amerikans are still very very racist and ignorant. They feign liberal progressivism. But demand that they actually show what they like to think they preach? they can't.

Thus they can't support Outsourced - at surface level, because Amerikans are ignorant - they dismiss the jokes as culturally insulting. Right. It takes actual cultural openess to know what is an insult and what is not. Outsourced poked fun more at Amerikan ignorance of other cultures than it EVER did to Indian culture. Shame on Amerikans. Shame on NBC.

So so true. I can't stand people who think any joke or comment that involves a difference in culture/race is "offensive."

anyone who thinks that outsourced is offensive clearly has never watched the show. It takes a situation that could easily be made into something offensive, and makes a clever little commentary on the misunderstandings between our worlds, without getting political. And it's a hilarious show. it was becoming one of my favorite shows, and i looked forward to it every thursday night. This is going to be the "Freaks and Geeks" of my generation, all because apparently nbc thought they found something better to take its place (that will probably be cancelled midseason like "perfect couples"). I hope they find a change of heart sometime, and decide to give it another shot, because this could end up as one of the biggest regrets they'll ever have.

I don't know how many people realize this, but this show is based off a movie with the same title and I have to say it keeps to it pretty well for a show based off about 2 hours of movie play.

I'm completely missing the insult to Indian culture, though.

Go watch the movie, Mr. Harnick. If anything, the TV shows humanistic ignorance every culture shares between other cultural differences.

I think outsourced has a lot of potential. I regularly watch it and I don't enjoy cheap comedies and I don't think outsourced is one of them.

With some fine-tuning I think this show has long term potential and I'd be sad to see it go!

Cheap cultural jokes???? How are these cheap? Fart jokes are cheap. Cultural comedy actually educates. As an expat myself, I think this show is great. It IS funny. If you knew anything about another culture, maybe you would be able to find the humor in it. It is NOT racist, it is a humerous potrayal of what happens when cultures colllide.
Now, Modern Family is not funny. I really don't see what the fuss is all about. I love Al Bundy just as much as the next guy- but hey, the show's not funny.
Outsourced is a refreshing change from the boring old "we're a wacky family" comedy that most Americans seem to enjoy. I think that Outsourced will be cancelled, and it will be realized a few years down the road that it actually WAS genious.
