Ricky Gervais to Interview for Steve Carell's 'Office' Job

Ricky GervaisPrepare yourself for one of the most squirmingly uncomfortable -- and hilarious -- scenes you'll see on TV this year: David Brent interviewing for Michael Scott's job in 'The Office.'

We reported earlier this week that both Ricky Gervais and Will Arnett will appear in the season 7 finale on May 19. Details of the finale have been sketchy, but Gervais let slip a few tidbits during an interview with BBC Radio 1 in the U.K.

Asked about the beard he's been sporting recently he said "I'm shaving it into a goatee because I'm popping up in the American 'The Office' ... But that was a top secret."

And, although NBC has so far refused to comment on which character will take over as full-time boss of the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin, one U.K. newspaper is reporting that it is David Brent.

The Daily Mail says it has confirmation from an NBC source that Gervais "is back to replace outgoing star Steve Carell."

The Mail quotes an NBC spokesperson as saying, "Ricky is back as David Brent for the last episode of the series where he will be vying for the manager's job ... But in typical David Brent style he won't make it easy for them to hire him."

Gervais shot to stardom in 2001 when he starred in the U.K. version of 'The Office,' which he also co-wrote with Stephen Merchant. He played bumbling boss David Brent for two seasons before the show ended in 2003. He revisited the role in January when he made a minute-long cameo appearance in the U.S. version, at the end of which he asked Michael Scott to let him know if there were any future job openings at Dunder-Mifflin.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Oh my GOD, would that be the best news ever. Just bring him back for one season! Half a season! How unbelievably great would that be...
