'Dancing With the Stars': Week Two Performances Recap

This season of 'Dancing With the Stars' could easily turn into the 'Ralph Macchio and Kirstie Alley Show,' since both fan favorites have proved delightful on the dance floor. But, for me, this week's main attraction was Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas' "weird and wonderful" jive.Since there was no elimination last week, all 11 contestants returned again -- either hoping for redemption (like Wendy Williams and Mike Catherwood) or trying to stay on top (like Ralph and Kirstie). Adding to the pressure was the fact that last week's viewer votes and judges' scores are being combined with this week's in order to decide who will get the boot during Tuesday night's results show.
While certain stars, like Ralph and Kirstie, are surely safe (right? right?!), it was time for the others to try to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack in order to keep up. While I'm already on board with the obvious fan favorites, I've added an unexpected pick to my roster: a bubbly blonde Disney star who didn't make a big impression last week.
Maybe it was the intoxicating combination of an uber-catchy tune (Panic! at the Disco's 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies'), whimsical costumes and high-octane dance moves, but Chelsea and Mark's routine had me riveted and convinced it was going to be a game-changer for the duo. The judges, however, thought otherwise, for the most part.
Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman both chastised the couple for being "too contemporary" and not incorporating enough standard jive steps into the performance. (Of course, Mark spent his time in the celebriquarium pointing out just how many true jive steps were, in fact, used.) Bruno Tonioli was the only one on their side, calling it a creatively "weird and wonderful" mix inspired by legendary mime Marcel Marceau and movies like 'Lolita' and 'A Clockwork Orange.'
Perhaps the routine was so appealing because it became obvious this week just how much Derek Hough's ingenuity and skill is missed on the dance floor. The three-time mirrorball champ has pulled some amazing routines out of his hat over the years. Was Mark channeling his sorely missed BFF, or did Derek slip him a few off-the-record suggestions? To be fair, Mark has had a few magic tricks of his own, including Shawn Johnson's unforgettable freestyle dance that won them the season 8 competition. Maybe he just got his mojo back? Whatever went down, it was hard to ignore Chelsea's kewpie-doll cuteness and Mark's ringmaster bravado.
Other surprisingly notable dances included Chris Jericho's "bright and breezy" quickstep and Romeo's 'Grease'-themed performance that Len called "the best of the night."
Still struggling, though, were Wendy Williams, Sugar Ray Leonard and "Psycho" Mike Catherwood, who each garnered a combined score of 17. Of the three, Len predicted Sugar Ray was in the most trouble, mainly because he showed the least improvement.
Now it all comes down to whom viewers voted for. Will it be a predictable elimination or a complete shocker? All will be revealed during Tuesday night's results show ...
'Dancing With the Stars' airs Mondays at 8PM ET and Tuesdays at 9PM ET on ABC.
