'American Idol' Recap: Naima and Thia Take Two for the Road
The odds of a girl breaking the "dudes with guitars" winning streak on 'American Idol' just got a lot slimmer. After a record breaking 55 million plus votes, Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo fell victim to this week's double elimination.
While their seating in the bottom three came as no surprise, I was fairly confident Stefano Langone (who hit the bottom three last week) would join them and depart with one of the ladies. With both Thia and Naima gone now, it's up to Lauren Alaina, Pia Toscano and Haley Reinhart to keep the hope alive of a girl taking back the crown this season.
Good luck, "Peaches!"
The night started with 'Idol' straight-A kids Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina singing Carrie Underwood's 'I Told You So,' after which they learned their easily predictable fates. Both will go on to continue to woo the Wal-Mart music department crowd (nothing wrong with that, I love country music). Aww shucks, thanks ya'll!
Before putting the next twosome through the ringer, we got to check out this week's Ford music video, which I must say, was pretty damn cool. Imagine the X-Men, except instead of Wolverine, Storm and Cyclops, we've got Casey Abrams, Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk. OK, maybe not the stuff of Marvel legend, but still a pretty slick, fun Ford commercial.
Next up, Naima and Jacob partnered on the Ashford & Simpson classic 'Solid.' Naima held it down while Jacob sounded more like Valerie Simpson than Nickolas Ashford.
Of course, choirboy Jacob was safe while Naima was the first sent to sit and stew in the bottom three section.
While Naima contemplated her fate, season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino returned to the 'Idol' stage to perform "'Collard Greens and Cornbread,' the latest single from her third studio album, 'Back to Me.' While her Snooki-esque blonde poof and sparkly red dress weren't quite a hit, it was nice to be reminded of Fantasia's amazing ability to go from sounding like a coy 3-year-old to a husky, belting diva in one verse.Unfortunately, her performance was followed up by an uncomfortable rendition of Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' by Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart and Pia Toscano. Here we had Pia doing an upbeat number and she still looked like she should be singing the first dance song at Connie Corleone's wedding. And it just felt weird watching 16-year-old Thia Megia sing about her "skin-tight jeans." Haley seemed like the only member of the trio that was into the tune. But then again, she was front and center.
Among the three girls, it was Thia who earned a seat next to Naima, as expected. Haley's still riding a wave of momentum from last night and with the girls' numbers dwindling, she may be in it for the long haul.
Before the third and final member of the bottom three was revealed, we had to sit through a pre-taped package on the roof leak in the 'Idol' mansion, which is old news to most fans by now. Then there was a rehash of last week's Casey Abrams save and the backstage drama that ensued. More hugging, doctors, blood transfusions, stumbling around in a post-traumatic stupor, you know the drill by now.
It seems that in between regular visits to Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and fleeing from the haunted 'Idol' mansion, Casey has had time to form a band with James Durbin, Stefano Langone and Paul McDonald. You know, all "the dudes with guitar" types that will probably make it to the finale. They performed Wings' 'Band on the Run' before learning that all but Paul McDonald were safe this week. Luckily, no theatrics from Casey, tonight.
After sitting through what seemed like will.i.am's hundredth auto-tuned performance (this time with Jamie Foxx) on 'Idol' this season (the tune is called 'Hot Wings' from the upcoming animated film 'Rio,' if anyone cares), Naima and Thia were sent packing.
On the bright side, we can look forward to Naima's reggae rendition of 'Hotel California' on tour this summer. Fingers crossed!
