'Archer' Season 2, Episode 10 Recap

by Maureen Ryan, posted Apr 1st 2011 12:30AM
['Archer' - 'El Secuestro']

Every week on 'Archer,' we learn a bit more about the characters who inhabit the ISIS offices. This week, we got a bumper crop of interesting intel. A brief rundown of the high points goes something like this:

• Pam is awesome.

• Ray, along with Pam, is one of the few ISIS employees who has something approaching a moral center.

• Cheryl is not just an incompetent, glue-sniffing secretary, she's also the heiress to half a billion dollars, give or take $50 million.

• Cheryl also owns an ocelot. Duh!

We learned nothing new about Malory in this episode: We already knew that she is one hell of a cheapskate -- when it comes to employees, that is. If it's office decor we're talking about, she's willing to spend top dollar to get the perfect table for her conference room. Pam, a loyal employee, is worth 5K to Malory. And no, I don't believe she was willing to budge on that number.

Archer, also true to form, acted like the self-absorbed man we've come to know and love. As is so often the case, he was comically off-task for most of the episode. Saving Pam took a back seat to his appreciation of the name Tunt, to his desire to be Hostage Negotiator No. 1 and to his heated argument with Ray over who got to wear the tight black turtleneck. Oh, he was also distracted by Cheryl's bored ocelot and by the voice modulator/robot voice that the kidnappers were using.

Way to stay on top of a volatile situation, Archer.

But seriously, who would have thought, when 'Archer' first began, that Pam would emerge as an admirable folk hero? Here she got to be lovable action icon, taking punches like a champ and spitting blood with perfect nonchalance. Her responses to her would-be kidnappers were golden throughout ("Maybe see if your daddy will give you a roll of nickels").

Last season Pam was the target of a few too many not-funny fat jokes, but she's since evolved into a key character on the show. She's tough, saucy, free-spirited and she loves life, especially if life involves drinking 10 forty-ounce brews in one evening. She's one heck of a dame.

And like Ray, she's the one character who is actually a good person, at least in this whacked-out universe. I'd argue that Lana is often fairly sane and more or less good on a regular basis, but Pam and Ray are really the moral center of the show, if one can really be said to exist within the frequently nutty confines of the ISIS building.

Good for Pam that she called Malory on her b.s., but, like the rest of the employees, Pam will no doubt show up at work the next day for more abuse. And she'd better not be late.

Here's my bullet list of notes, observations and favorite quotes (feel free to add yours in comments):

• Pam drinks shandy. I love her even more thanks to this random fact.

• No Krieger this week. Sadface.

• So Pam goes through this whole huge adventure and never once says, "Oh, s*** snacks?" What's that about?

• I love Cyril's ineptitude with firearms, which is only exceeded by his even more impressive ineptitude as a kidnapper.

• "Like a huge, sweatery Lindbergh baby!"

• "Apparently slavery was pretty awesome."

• "Total s***box. They're weird."

• When will Brett learn that working at ISIS is just not good for your health? Whoops, I think it's too late for Brett to learn that lesson.

• "Who taught you to how to punch? Your husband?"

• The flashback to Pam's days as an underground fighter was oh so delicious.

• "The IRS? Jesus! How many Irish gangs are there?"

• "Aw, don't be dicks."

• "Hey trainspotting, can you dial that modulation down a skoche?"

• "Does internet porn know you're cheating on it?"

• Thousands of bullets were flying near the end of the episode, but I think only Cheryl got dinged a little bit. I love that animated shows can actually make fun of the fact that many things that transpire on them are not really plausible.

• "Maybe I lowballed them at first, but I had some wiggle room!"

• And Lana's final "Nooope" was priceless, as was Pam's back tattoo.

• A final bit of good news for 'Archer' fans: The show has been renewed for a 16-episode third season. Three episodes will air in September, alongside 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' episodes, and the remainder of the season will arrive in early 2012. As Cyril would say, "Hooray!"

'Archer' airs 10PM ET Thursdays on FX.

This show is awesome. I was laughing at that Fight Club like flashback where she was counting her money and apologizing for what she did to their friend. This show has so many good little twists and everyone is messed up to each other in some way. I work all the time but luckily I work for Dish Network so during my breaks I can just watch Archer on my phone with the Dish Remote app and the Sling Adapter. I can't wait to see more and it stinks that the season is going by so fast!

Also how Archer was completely okay for Pam to go apocalyptic on Mallory at the end. Sort of full circle from the last scene of season one, episode one. Where I am, there's no one that airs Archer, so it took some effort to find this show and get completely up-to-date from the beginning. Well worth the effort. And now after that glut of viewing comes the hiatus until season three. THERE'S your sad face....

My favorite thing this week was watching Cyril come up with an idiotic lie (phone sex?), and then going out of his way to try and make it stick (also, the way he ends his phone call - what a moron). This episode was probably in my top three for the season so far.

I love this show so much, but I have to wait until the kids are in bed. But then I get in trouble because I laugh out loud, often and fittfully. Internet porn and "Nope." were my two favorite bits.
