'Bethenny Ever After' Season 1, Episode 6 Recap

by Amy Kuperinsky, posted Apr 5th 2011 6:15AM
Jason Hoppy and Bethenny Frankel, 'Bethenny Ever After'['Bethenny Ever After' - 'Fleeing From 40']

Poor Jason, but good Jason. It was hard to empathize with Bethenny when she shuttered herself in the bathroom to cry bloody murder. Everyone around her was supportive and happy to make her happy. But there was that old chestnut, her past, latent or invisible most of the time, exploding at just the wrong moment.

So, her husband was good to weather the storm, however inconvenient or awkward it was. What are over 40 friends and family members when you've constantly got cameras in the house, anyway?

Still, you had to feel bad for Jason when he had to sheepishly offer up "she really hates birthdays" to the guests in order to explain Bethenny's deer-in-headlights reaction to the non-surprise party. A surprise affair probably would've significantly upped the therapy bills for Bethenny. That is, if it didn't do worse, like induce some kind of catatonic state, for example.

Whether it was the make-up artist or Ramona offering explanations for why this kind of birthday breakdown (that really had nothing to do with the number 40) can occur, the fact that they "got it" didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Bethenny was still going to have her breakdown.

At least Jason wasn't exactly glossing over this disaster of sorts. He was unafraid to label his wife's 40th birthday party a "trainwreck," in terms of Bethenny's weepy, stressed-out response. As for the planning, Shawn was on-point. Yet after watching this episode he might again wonder why he was hired at all.

One can only hope Gina received some kind of apology from Bethenny for the feeding comment. However that whole possible-baptism debacle overshadows this small infraction, especially since Bethenny actually didn't know what was going on behind her back.

It might seem like Jason does candy-coat the issue by looking on the very, very bright side, acknowledging that he at least has learned something about Bethenny in the process. Yet what else can he do? Get angry at Bethenny and thus create even more problems? He did want the party more than her, it seemed, probably because he wanted to, as he said, rewrite her experience of negative birthdays. You can't fault him for trying.

Maybe the skating routine with Ethan will prove more successful. Then again, if you watched 'Skating With the Stars,' you already know what went down.

Of course there's that sunny ending, with puppy, baby and parents in the bathtub, dressed in full beach attire, including sunglasses for Cookie. It was never going to end with Bethenny bawling in the bathroom.

'Bethenny Ever After' airs Mondays, 10PM ET on Bravo.

I understood how you felt Bethenny. You have a Great husband but there was NO way he could understand from where you were coming from. He blew it with you the moment he told the you were being selfish with YOUR own birthday party. That his friends should be there too bla bla bla, It was YOUR birthday not his. He should have choose ANY other time to make it a couple thing BUT NOT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY. Its your day. Let him set up your birthday next year, this year was for YOU!!!! When he and his parents left Gina with the Baby. It made you so sad because you love how his parents love Bryn in some way that makes you feel so special too. That moment could have brought you back from that SELFISH comment he made at you, before. If they just taken her with them He and his parents got lost in the moment of wanting to get you something for Your Birthday and lost sight of what it was you really needed for Birthday to be perfect. What happened was that basically left you with the BABY and having to get dressed for your own birthday party. If they had just taken the baby with them...I know that would have been a nice beginning for YOUR birthday .But, By that time you were already starting to melt down. When he said that " you should just suck it up"? He had NO clue of how sad you were and how your heart was breaking. The hardest part was he didn't realize what he was doing, even though he was the one who started it all. Its the simplest things that mean SO much that you can say and or do.Sorry Jason but you were the one being selfish here next year all for you but not this year. ITS HER BIRTHDAY!!! Why couldn't you and your parents have taken the baby with you? What was the harm in that. The Baby would have been spoiled and then Bethenny would have felt spoiled too. Happy Birthday Bethenny! Your NOT Crazy You were let down just one more time. The crazy part is that they do not even understand "why"?

Jason tried very hard..and you could see Bethenny just falling further off the cliff with each little 'surprise'. But she rebounded..and hopefully nobody ever throws her another birthday party. I wanted to just reach in to the screen and tell Ramona to just shut up because she was not helping. Everytime I see her event planner Shawn..all I can think is that he has to be the twin brother of Tony Hale (Buster of Arrested Development and so many other appearances) That's all I think about when he is on screen!
