Soap News: Genie Francis Joins 'Y&R,' New 'AMC' Head Writer and More
The most famous female star of 'General Hospital,' Emmy-winner Genie Francis, is coming back to the soaps -- but on 'The Young and the Restless' this time. So forget about Laura returning to Port Charles to save Luke from his alcoholic haze on 'GH.' Genie will be heading to Genoa City to play Cane Ashby's mother.Since Cane's just a ghost now, you can expect Mama Ashby to be flying to Wisconsin to meet her daughter-in-law Lily, and Cane's children, twins Matilda and Charlie.
What's intriguing is that Francis will likely be working with Tristan Rogers as Colin, Cane's Aussie mob boss father. Like Francis, Rogers is best known from his tenure on 'GH,' where he played super-spy Robert Scorpio. Francis's first appearance on-camera will be in May.
New 'Old' Head Writer for 'All My Children'?
According to Soaps in Depth, 'All My Children' is poised to make a switch in the writing department. Former head writer Lorraine Broderick is coming back to helm 'AMC' again. SID tweeted the news, and also assured fans that ABC would be confirming the hire this week. The publication is also convinced that the rumors of 'AMC's' cancellation are not true.
Speaking of those rumors, last week in TV Guide, columnist Michael Logan reported that ABC's daytime head Brian Frons was contemplating dropping both 'AMC' and 'OLTL.' In their place, a talk show and a reality program would be a cheaper alternative for the network ... at least in the short run.
ABC Daytime's head of P.R., Jori Petersen, would not confirm the story and added that all this news of no more 'AMC' and 'OLTL' is just conjecture and rumor at this time.
Haskell Axed by 'One Life to Live'Marty Saybrooke may have gotten out of the mental hospital, but her portrayer has been sent out of Llanview. 'OLTL's' Susan Haskell has been let go. The two-time Emmy winner has become the victim of lack of storyline and shrinking budgets.
There's been no official announcement from ABC, nor has a final air date been revealed.
Haskell's character, as I mentioned, is now out of St. Ann's asylum and could be phased out naturally with her leaving town. However, I suspect that she's going to do something dramatic, like kidnap Natalie's baby.
She Maid It All Right
Actress Kate Linder, Esther Valentine on 'Y&R,' has been the loyal maid and dear friend to Katherine Chancellor for years. In fact, on April 10, Kate will celebrate 29 years on the CBS soap. Brava, Kate ... you're proof that there's no such thing as small roles, only small actors.
Film Noir Comes to Port Charles
Following in the footsteps of fictional detectives like Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade, cyber sleuth Damian Spinelli has chronicled his adventures in a new novel called 'The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli.'
The book is the latest spinoff from 'General Hospital,' as actress Carolyn Hennesy -- who plays Diane Miller -- wrote the book using the Spinelli character (Bradford Anderson) as inspiration. Here's a video promo for the project which will be available today, April 5th:
According to the press release, Hennesy's work had new Spinelli stories as told to Diane. "Filled with mystery and suspense, the book includes never-before-told stories of Port Charles residents -- their confessions and behaviors in times of crises and triumphs through Spinelli's imagination. Jason? Sonny? The Quartermaines? No one in town is spared."
