It's Alec Baldwin (Yankees) vs. John Krasinski (Red Sox) in New Era Campaign (VIDEO)

John Krasinski in New Era adIn the world of rivalries, you can't get any better than the one between the Yankees and the Red Sox. The fans of each team are so passionate in both the love of their team and the hatred of the other team that it makes the Mac vs. PC rivalry look silly in comparison.

The folks at New Era, who manufacture all the caps for Major League Baseball, have taken this rivalry to a new level and hired two of NBC's biggest comedy stars to show that Yanks vs. Sox transcends everything, including Thursday comedy lineup camaraderie.

In the ad -- the first of a series -- Yankee fan Alec Baldwin ('30 Rock') is talking on the phone with Red Sox fanatic John Krasinski ('The Office'), and the trash talking between them is reminiscent of two buddies jawing about the teams over a few beers, with a few clever barbs thrown in for good measure.

The commercial and more after the jump.

The ad, shot in black and white, show the two actors in what is perceived to be their natural environments: The suave Baldwin is at a cocktail party and the down-to-earth Krasinski is standing in his kitchen, Sox hat perched proudly on his head. "Are you a Phillies fan now?" Krasinski asks Baldwin. "You guys couldn't get Cliff Lee and he went to Philadelphia for less money?"

Baldwin refuses to acknowledge that Philadelphia is a real sports town, then Krasinski snaps back with "It's going to be the worst misery you've ever experienced in the history of this rivalry."

In his Baldwin-esque way, Alec scoffs at the term. "For the last time, this is not a rivalry, just like fire doesn't have a rivalry with kindling, lawn mowers don't have a rivalry with grass, and the United States doesn't have a rivalry with Costa Rica." In the funniest part of the ad, we cut to Krasinski mouthing "a rivalry with Costa Rica," indicating that this isn't the first time Alec has made the same argument.

It's a fun spot, for a number of reasons. It brings Baldwin down to earth a little bit, and it shows that, no matter what station a guy is in life, whether he's a sitcom star or a guy in the bleachers, trash talk is part of our DNA.

What this has to do with baseball caps, beyond the one on Krasinski's head, is yet to be seen. But you can go to the New Era website and vote for Team Baldwin (Yanks) or Team Krasinski (Sawx). The ad makes me wonder: If Krasinski thinks "you're going to be dead by October" now, how is he going to feel when the Sox are 5 games in back of the Yankees in September?

So Alec Baldwin basically is Jack Donaghy now, right?
