Tina Fey Remembers Her Humble Beginnings at Second City Comedy (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Apr 13th 2011 3:45PM
Tina Fey on 'Today'Chicago's Second City is a revered institution in the comedy community, having produced a long list of talented performers from Alan Arkin and Joan Rivers, to John Belushi and Gilda Radner, to Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. So it made sense to hear Tina Fey on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) describing how she thought she'd "made it" in the mid-90s because she was working and touring with the troupe.

"It was kind of a cult of improv comedy where people would just, all they cared about was just comedy, doing improv all the time," said Fey. "We used to travel around the country and do shows for the Second City Touring Company where we'd get $75 a show and we were like, 'Yes!'"

Fey's fond memories of driving around with ten people in a dirty van, sometimes traveling for three days to get to that $75 gig is a fond memory shared by an awful lot of talented comedians.
